Observation of 1M vs M3

I just came across this picture and it made me realize how much more I like the overall appearance of the m3 over the 1m. Dont get me wrong, i love the 1m too and would love to have one! i just think the M3 looks so much more sleek.

Yeah, no way that the 1 competes with the 3 in the looks department.

There's just something sexy about the sound of a V8 that has a hood lump because it was too big for the engine bay but they forced it in there anyway. It is both elegant and redneck, and I love it.

I love the 1m, but I share the same opinion - the M3, IMO, is downright sexy looking. It is very sleek and the shape and proportions are perfect. Again, I love them both and would not mind having a 1m in the stable as well.

The 1M is a cool car and in VO it definitely turns heads. But ultimately it's one of the ugliest current BMWs. That photo does a nice job of demonstrating that, and it didn't even take into account the lovely pot belly pig line on the 1.

I saw 1M yesterday, it seriously doesn't show itself.

On the other hand, you look in the rearview and you see the huge hood bulge of the M and you know the deal. E46M3 lacked that appearance, big time.

The 1M is a cute little car that I see a lot more women in then men. Nothing wrong with that at all.

I honestly compare the 1M with the Z4MC. They are more on equal terms than the M3. We all know this. Speaking as an ex Z4MC owner.

I love them both, but M3 looks way sexier! I only wish they gave the 1M a proper M engine.

Let's see, the M3 can be had in coupe, sedan and convertible all with auto tranny, and dealers have plenty in the showrooms. On the other hand, the 1M is only available with a stick and was built in tiny numbers and never lingered in the showrooms where housewives can see it. So yeah, you must be right.

I doubt there are more than 5 female 1M owners in the US, total.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

^ I was thinking the same thing. More likely 128s. On topic, I love both cars and my choice is different depending on the day but usually it's the M3.

I am NOT saying this because I have a 135, but I really think the 1M is the best platform BMW makes. At least in a track sense. The short wheelbase and much lower weight being the largest benefit, the m3 having it's NA powerhouse under the hood is its one advantage. Advantage not necessarily meaning it's more powerful/faster.

This will be good.......quick comment before I enjoy the show. Most track rats will say that a turbo charged car is too unpredictable in a track setting. And I've heard this from 1M owners. So this will put a hole in your theory.......now to the show ...........Phil

DCT is also an advantage for the M3 on the track.

Yes, I meant to point that out by saying the NA motor of the M3 is its largest advantage. It's not the fact that it's unpredictable, it's the fact that all throttle adjustments have to rebuild manifold pressure. It ends up being more difficult to walk the line of adhesion. I'm really not trying to stir the pot here, I think my points are very valid. I am not knocking the M3 (except for its weight, which I think everyone will agree with) I am just pointing out why I believe the 1M may be the better track platform.

Absolutely, people may say "well manuals are more fun" and I am one of those people. However more ratios being swapped quicker is undoubtedly an advantage plus it allows you to left foot brake.

Yeap.
A tuned 335is engine is not a true M engine.
My opinion is that a true M car must have a true M engine under the hood and clearly this is not the case.

The 1M looks a little odd, kinda squashed and bulging.

Since now even the 650i gets the N63tu engine, the days of a bespoke ///M engine are gone with the S65.

More women in the 1M? I seriously doubt that. The M3 convertible alone probably has 100 times as many female drivers as the 1M total, likely substantially more. I honestly think the fender bulges and large wheels/tires set it apart from a regular one series.

No doubt the s65 is a better track oriented engine, would have been unreal if the M-division had crammed it in the 1M. While the M3 has the better engine, and better aerodynamics it is a pig compared to the 1M. 3704 lbs vs. 3296, not even close. For most dual purpose cars the hardest thing to over come is weight.

I am not trying to say the 1M is better, its just different, and FOR ME it's better. While I think the s65 is a better engine, the n54 is a very nice engine for cruising around town and it's not too shabby on the track (99% of my driving is not on the track unfortunately). Plenty of power for me and more importantly, plenty of torque. Also, as I mentioned, lighter. Both are great in their own right. I think the 1M is a bastard child of BMW, but it's amazing and really offers certain enthusiasts different advantages.

I think we can all agree that the 1M is a ray of hope. While the M3 keeps getting heavier, more comfortable etc. the 1M is light weight and simple. I hope it is a sign of continued focus on fulfilling the wishes of ALL enthusiasts. Not everyone wants an M car that keeps getting bigger. Just my .02 cents.

Since there are supposedly ~6,500 1M built, there would have to be at least 650,000 M3 convertibles that are driven by women according to your logic.

For reference: Until end of production, I guess there will be at most 15,000 M3 E93 built.

The production numbers for the whole M3 E9x line will likely not exceed 100,000 cars of which ~22% are convertibles, this would be less than three times as many as there are 1M coupes.

The increased weight has not affected the performance negatively of the M3 so what's the riff? The US has some strict regulations which adds on pounds.

Oh, and i never saw a female driving a 1M.
