There is hope! New Mclaren Twin Turbo V8 has 8,500 RPM redline. (nt)

But...

HP peaks at 7,000.

A move in the right direction, but I wouldn't say problem solved. I did think to myself when reading C&D's review of the MP4-12C (horrible name) the TT 3.8 V8 would probably make a nice M3 engine. It started out as a Nissan engine if I remember correctly. It reportedly gets 22 mpg on the highway and generates well over 500hp, again, if I remember correctly.

Yeah, that engine was first announced over a year ago now. Here's some past discussion from the forum:

http://www.google.com/search?q=McLar...e%3Am3post.com
http://www.google.com/search?q=mp4-1...e%3Am3post.com

But there's Really no hope of an M engine revving this high since fuel economy would likely be scarcely better than the outgoing S65/S85.

Don't where you were 1MORELAP, but that is what I was saying already 1 year ago. For all others, the MP4-12C engine is the best turbo engine ever. Well, can't deny the LF-A or the 458 Italia still sound better, but the Macca doesn't sound bad at all, on the contrary it sounds good (though never heard it in real, only vids).

This were my latest realistic and pessimitic specs speculation:

BMW M3 F32
TT 3.0l I6
450 PS @ 6.500 RPM
500 Nm @ 2.500-6.500 RPM
Redline @ 7.500 RPM

I still hope it will be better than this. If not, the car better weigh 1550 kg (EU).

Oh and for those who do not know just look at M3 vs. MP4-12C

M3 / MP4-12C
NA 4.0l V8 / TT 3.8l V8
420 PS / 600 PS
400 Nm / 600 Nm
11,2 l/100km / 11,7 l/100 km
263 g/km CO² / 279 g/km CO²

And you know how much faster the Macca is?

Does anyone know what the hp curve looks like between its 7,000 rpm peak and the 8,500 rpm redline? I assume it's fairly flat, else what is the point?

Not sure, but I would not be surprised if it fell off like an N54/N55 (probably not as bad though). One point to it would be to allow the car to land higher up in the powerband when hitting the next gear. I.e you start to lose power in the higher rev range, but you'd be making even less if you had to shift to the next gear earlier.

There are reports coming out through the grapevine that the new Mclaren just blitzed the 'ring in 7:00 dead... That's scary fast... that's make a GTR, 458, GT2RS look slow kind of fast.

Still hasn't been confirmed and we don't know if it was on slicks or street tires but if its true (regardless of the rubber it was wearing) its going to be one hell of a car!

So is it true, the engine is based on a Nissan? Any more details on this?

According to the April C&D, the nominated engine for the MP4-12C was originally developed in Nissan's racing dept as a spinoff from the Infiniti Q45 V8. But, it goes on to say that the bore (93mm) and little else still remains from the Nissan, as the engine (M838T) was developed in collaboration with Ricardo.

^^^

Interesting info, JB. I didn't know that. So with a 93mm bore, that's 1mm more than the S65. And with less displacement, that's going to be a real short stroke, meaning lower max piston speeds than the S65.

But a lot more stress with FI , especially if the 11:1 CR made it to production. Hey, is it a flat crank? Don't remember reading crank specs.
