Unhappy BMWNA M Manager: No Plans for Lightweight E90 M3 Sedan in US At This Time

BMWNA M Manager: No Plans for Lightweight E90 M3 Sedan in US At This Time
67
COMMENTS

In our interview (full interview here) with Matt Russell, M Brand and Alpina Manager for the US, at the 2011 NYIAS, we asked about the likelihood of the US market receiving the upcoming lightweight M3 sedan (info/pics).

The unfortunate news is that there are currently no plans to bring the lightweight M3 sedan to the US market.
Matt cites the reason as there being not much time left to build the E90 M3 sedan and the always difficult homologation issue (couldn't certify for US).

As with certain prior special edition M3s (such as the E46 M3 CSL and E92 M3 GTS Coupe) and even certain performance parts (such as the BMW Performance seats), it's at times difficult to get things federalized for sale in the U.S.

Having said that, however, Matt continues by saying that BMW always takes a look at the componentry that they offer on some of these special editions like the GTS and the upcoming lightweight sedan, and tries to see if there's anything that can be used or made to fit here in the states that would be easier to homologate.

Honestly I don't care - because it is unaffordable to me and looks no different than a lightly modded M3. I prefer BMW to save its unwise financial decisions for other projects.

Surprise surprise. I'd like to get my hands on that new front splitter whenever they release it.

You realize it was personal greed and crack legal teams that brought us all in North America in to this position?!

That is not Cool

Okay I didn't want a sedan. Bring the coupe. I can only hope that this is all about semantics and the coupe will come later............but at this point there is almost zero hope.

Funny how our government chooses what it needs to protect us from and what it doesn't.

U.S. Regulations = FAIL.

Cheers,

Sorry - but I could care less. It doesn't look that great, will not perform much better than a stock E92 ZCP and would probably cost north of $80K anyway (a la frozen grey coupe).

Big deal.

WORD!!

I hate that I can't drive a CSL here in the states because of all the lame saftey regs.

Why are the bottom seat bolsters on the E9X M3 different than the rest of the world?!

I make a conscience decision to drive a car that doesn't have side airbags, thad has fixed back seats. Let me live with that, don't tell me I am not allowed to drive it! Ugh!

I may have missed this from another thread, but what are the actual performance numbers for this car? Could the weight savings be just as easily applied to E92?
