Brake cooling ducts

Planning to have few track days this year with my me E90. I think brake cooling duct would be good upgrade. Do you guys know any vendors selling these?

Cantrell Motorsports sell a set. Ask for vaseline before filling out the credit card info.

They do work and make a huge difference to the consistency of stock brakes in sessions.

are there any issues with running a brake duct cooling kit on the street? I am also considering getting a brake cooling kit.

I haven't noticed any yet. I might plug them for winter. The only issue is routing them to avoid rubbing. They will end up being crushed by one thing or another, but will still remain open enough to supply air.

Not a bad idea. Do you have the Cantrell motorsports kit? It looks nice and i like that it includes all hardware and backing plates. It is very pricey though..

Yes. I picked it up in classifieds for a good price. It is straightforward to install, but it is pricey.

Any decent race shop can make most of these parts for a fraction of what these kits cost.

I'm very happy with the CMS kit. Along with Pagid yellows and SS lines I can go very hard on my stock brakes with no fade (tested up to 25 minute sessions so far).

Fine on the street. My install does rub a bit at full lock, but I don't often have the need to drive above 3 mph at full lock so it hasn't been an issue. Apparently their latest install instructions are supposed to eliminate this as well.

how are your front caliper seals? A few 30 minute sessions with no ducting and with track pads made short work of them. no fade though...

Where do you route the air from, and on an otherwise stock car, do you just tie the hose down somewhere underneath the car?

search the forum for brake ducts and you will see how people have rigged these up. you are always going to suffer from a bit of rubbing and crushing (it is tight in the wheel wells), but they can be made to work

If you think Cantrell are high, try installing the real GT4 pieces. $600+ each plus $200 for front ducts plus $100 for special size 70mm hose from Germany. $1500 total but a lot nicer and better function than Cantrell.

i made my own using apex gt4 ducts and bought rest of my parts from summit. ended up doing 3 inch the whole way which was a mistake due to excessive rubbing. works fine for a non street car but turning radius is greatly reduced.

I was going to mention that if you needed vaseline for Cantrell, you would need stirrups as well for some of the other options!

just looked them up on turner. $500 for front ducts $90 for hoses. Still not backing plate though. Cantrell seem pretty good for the money. I think I may need to get one of these kits.

I saw a thread on here where his stock e90 had the brake ducts already below the front cover. Mine seems like its just cardboard with some fur on it.

Some on here have seen big improvements with just a 2.5 or 3" hose routed to the fender liner the way just about all BMW's are set up, except on our inexplicably ductless cars. You don't necessarily have to go with backing plates to get most of the benefit of ducting when you're starting with zip for cooling (like we have from the factory for some reason). For a street car that's where I'd stop, coupled with a better pad, if I wanted to stay with the stock brakes anyway, but that Stoptech front 355 kit is so reasonably priced relative to a $800 stock front brake job, kinda makes it hard to ignore the opportunity to upgrade unless you really just want to stay stock or are really sticking to a budget

The apex unit is very nice, compared to the oem bmw performance one they are spot on (minus the carbon fiber composite)

don't bother with the carbon fiber front ducts for $500. get the apex ones for $200/pair. The GT4 backing plates are not easily available. Only the GT4 dealers in the US can get them. They are over $600 each. The matching hose is 70mm which is Euro purchase only. I got my hoses from a dealership in Belgium. It is 2.75" which i could not find domestically.

the backing plates force air through the rotor vanes. there are tight clearances to assure the air exit the vanes. just plumbing air into the wheelwell seems like a complete waste to me.
