Matching the paint after an accident... is it really impossible like dealer says-SSII

Hi,
I had an accident couple months ago. One night, I hit a tire/wheel that was left on the left lane around 70mph. Besides the tire wheel and suspension damage, i also had the fender that cracked due to pressure of impact even there was no direct damage.

Long story short, i took the car to dealers collision center. i had to monitor the work constantly as it turns out, they are not the most skilled people. anyway, car was fixed etc and front bumper, hood and fender was re-painted. They used the correct A29 paint, but it is different than the rest of the car.

One can say its due to the faint of paint under sun over time but i have the original license plate holder that i never put on the car and kept in my house - the new paint dont match that either.

so i am wondering if it is really possible to fix SSII or is this normal.

Thanks in advance

Bad body shop

Hey. I had a similar issue with my car, had to have the fender painted. You should go back and have them re paint it. Matching the color is hard but hell that's what you paid them to do! They should at least blend it for you. How much did they charge? Send me a pm I'll explain my whole situation and how I got it resolved.

It is difficult and might not ever be absolutely perfect to the eyes of a very skilled painter, however, with the right materials, right prep and solid skills you can match just about anything, at least well enough that it takes some serious scrutiny from and expert to note the difference. Over the years and repairs, mine, buddies and wifes car, I have certainly noted that you get what you pay for...

I have had the front bumper on my SSII resprayed twice (don't ask) and I am hard pressed to tell the difference between that bumper and the hood or fenders.

The dealer did a pretty decent job on mine. I am sure it is not perfect and somebody very skilled might be able to see the mismatch. However, in most conditions you would not notice any difference in colour .

They blended the paint fine with other panels, the problem is that i know the color, and its just a bit darker and does not have the shine/glare of the SSII even though they used the same paint.

so you're saying you THINK it doesnt look the way SSII should look? That's likely not the case.

The whole point of blending is to make sure any small differences in the paint aren't noticeable from one panel to the next. You're over analyzing....

Did they match the color by the VIN? I don't know about BMW but VW will always have at least three different shades for every color so using the color code won't give you an exact match. Using the VIN will pull up the correct variation of whatever color.

Might be the case here.

It's hard but a decent and pricey show can do it. We have shops that are BMW specific and charge massive amounts of money but when the car is finished it looks better then original.
