Best way to get rid of the speed limiter ?
Hi,
Yesterday I got the possibility ( free highway ) to drive max. possible speed. The car feels good at 270 kmh ( = 168 mph ), then the speed limiter kicked in. The speed numbers are from the odo, so real numbers may be different. This was with OEM 19 inch wheels and stock tire sizes. Now, what is the best way to get rid of the speed limiter ? Is there an external box available or how can I get the OEM delimit ? I currently would not like to flash the ECU with a tuning file, the car is completely stock up to now. Appreciate your feedback. I dont think you could do it without an ECU tune

You cant get rid of the speed limiter per se. You still have to input a number in the ECU something like 330 or any number. The top speed does not work if you use 7th gear to attain it. You need to use 6th gear to bring it past 270+ then shift to 7th. At least thats how it worked for me when i hit 310+.

Hmm ... just talked with my dealership. I could buy the "M drivers package" and they would send the ECU to BMW Munich to remove the top speed limit at all. No loss of warranty. Price ~ US$ 2600
I have to verify and check on Monday whether the information is accurate and if there would be a cheaper option. |

ECU tune is much cheaper than the driver's package. I thought you had to have taken some performance driver's training before you can buy the package. In any case, why would you want to go faster than 168mph? Just more paint chips in the front of the car.

Get an ECU tune (no piggy back systems!), so long as it's from a reputable company/person you are better off. It's cheaper by 70% and BMW can't pick it up anyways.

They sell you this package including 2 days training but don't care whether you attend or not.
If this would be the only option I would stay away and wait until warranty is over. 2600 US$ is 20% of the price of a SC including an ECU tune with removed top speed limit . |

Hi
Since you are in Europe I know there are boxes to delimit the topspeed... but whatever you do, contrary to what some people say, BMW will always know if you have removed the limiter be it in the case of map or a box. The drivers package only delimits the car to 280km/h wich will see the display read 300km/h... be aware of that, because on the Autobahn the car can do a bit more in stock form... IŽm in the same boat as you and for me IŽll wait for warranty to be over or bite the bullet and get the drivers package... |

+1. I like to drive fast too, but 168 is already crazy fast. Plus don't think the car has much more than that anyway. Not to mention rpm are already on the stratosphere there. To each his own though. I still have to go past 120 on my M3. We used to have an 'unofficial track' around here with 60 miles of perfect asphalt, deserted, and flat as a pancake with miles of visibility, but ICE now constantly patrols the place and now put lines with 'speed monitored by aircraft', so I haven't been back. I'd have to go past 20 or 30 miles to be safe again. Might do that next winter, so I don't have to wash the darn car after that . But just momentarily, as always. No need to do more than 120 sustained IMO, especially with the engine already screaming, getting the mileage of a tank . Good day folks.

Contact ESS tuning in Norway they will do it for way less than the drivers package. 120 Mph feels slow over here in Germany this car is capable of the high 180's low 190's

I have an AA tune and hit 184MPH before braking in 1.5 miles @ Dade-Collier Airstrip last weekend. There was more to go but, didn't want to push it, braking takes a long distance at those speeds. The runway 2.25 Miles long.

Go with a good tune like Powerchip. Put just tell them you only want the limiters removed. Or go to your BMW dealer abs tell them to do it for you. I'm not sure if they will though. GL

I've got a great relationship with my BMW dealership in Germany and even they wont do it for me...like someone said earlier in the post the only way BMW will remove the limiter is that "drivers package" which is pricey!

If you wanted to do it and still have a warranty and still feel pretty much stock you could get a Dinan reflash and tell them not to do the rev to 8600 RPM
