How do you restrain yourselves? (from speeding)

I bought a 2009 M3 sedan about a month ago, and I just got a speeding ticket the other night! This was my first speeding ticket/moving violation in 10 years (I'm 30) and my 2nd speeding ticket ever.

The problem is that I live in Washington, DC and my office is only 2.5 miles away from home. The maximum speed limit between work and home is 35 MPH, so I feel like a rat in a cage! There's very little opportunity to open it up at all for a majority of my driving. On weekends, I get out of the city and drive some backroads/highways, which is awesome. But, during the week, I find myself turning off the "Power" button to help avoid the temptation of speeding. So, the question is: how do other M3 drivers/owners avoid speeding!?

With respect to the ticket, it was only $25 (and 2 points), but the violation was "unreasonable speed." The officer admitted that he didn't have a radar gun, but he heard me accelerating and thought I was doing at least 20 MPH over. Basically, I was at a stop light and when it turned green, I punched it. I accelerated hard, but then slowed down before I saw any police car lights. My car is stock, but I guess it's still loud when accelerating. I think I might just pay the $25 ticket and "Admit with Explanation," but I almost feel like I can make the case that the car is loud, right? He has no proof of my speed and I honestly can't say how fast I was going.

Bottom line: this car is quick and I guess I need to respect the power. Maybe I should have just gotten a 328/335, ugh...

My advice based on similar situation... I got a ticket for doing 75 on a 65 freeway (4 lanes, no traffic, beautiful sunny day), state coffers are empty so the ticket police are in overdrive.

Join a local BMWCCA chapter and participate in autox and HPDE track events. Autox usually runs $60/day, fun but not much driving time, a chance to mingle with other BMW enthusiasts. Track runs about $300-400/day with plenty of driving time and good instructors. Way cheaper than speeding tickets.

A daily driver that does 0-60 in 13.5 seconds.

I have the '06 which is faster than that '03 but not by much...

I'm really surprised you got caught in DC, open it up on Whitehurst Freeway when there isn't any traffic

Take it to the track and do some HPDE. That is the best way to get you need to push the car out of your system. Plus, they're really fun and it will make you a better driver.

First off, I'd fight the ticket. If he cannot provide proof you were speeding it is unlikely it will hold up in court, especially if he doesn't even show up to give his side at a hearing.

I set the speed limit warning in i-drive and it helps somewhat..

Yeah, I agree, autox and track. Have a few of those lined up this Spring as otherwise I'll go nuts.

I have a 25 mile one way commute to work each day 20 of which are on the highway. I am usually going about 10 miles over (75) and still find myself routinely getting passed by little old ladies in Camry's who have oxygen bottles sitting on the front seat. Having said that the cars that get pulled over seem to be performance oriented ones and the Camry's seem to fly under the radar. Driving an M3 is like wearing a bulls eye on your chest and they probably figure if you are on the road you must be speeding.

patience.. however my speeding tickets will tell you otherwise..

but seriously,
1. very few places to speed LA period.
2. very unsafe, cars can handle if but the roads cannot
3. also, other drivers cannot handle seeing a car fly by them so fast. they freak out and that can cause another accident.

it takes time to mellow down, but once you do, like i like to think i have, you realize how dangerous it is going fast.

i may sound like an old man but i want to be around for the next and the next and the next gen M3!

Only in the East Coast, would someone admit that they're speeding.
If I was in your position I would just bite the bullet and pay the fine; you never know if you're going to see the cop again

I think you can have fun without really risking too many tickets. I usually start off fast at lights but shut it down when I get slightly above the limit. I take exist and on ramps quickly (never cops on those around here), also if I lost control I would only hurt myself. Accelerate to pass a car on the highway but then drop back to speed limit, so limited time at higher speed. All of this is done in a safe and controlled manner so I can have fun with the car without too much risk.

I do over 100mph on the highway every day.. usually only for a few seconds.. then I slow to 80-90ish traffic permitting.. but a quick blast is super easy. Just use your discretion and get a fantastic Radar detector.

Stick your speeding ticket onto your speedometer.

cruise control.
...but if I get bored, shift into lower gear and high rev most of way enjoying the sound but not exceeding speed limit... if limit 60 mph, I get it into 3rd and keep it there for little while,- curbs the craving.

Throttles stuck wide open. Cops don't bother with them because they know that the drivers can't stop them.

I have no restrain, i was travelling a little quick in my gtr the other day and an unmarked car pulled me over. The officer turned out to be more interested in the car, asking all the standard questions: how much? how fast? etc,etc and jokingly asked if i was a drug dealer lol He must have thought i looked too young to drive a car like that legitimately.
