Good news M3 drivers! Why 70 Miles Per Hour Is the New 55?
Good article I just read. Now we can use more of our engines potential, well at least to 70 rather than 55mph on most rural roads! Whoohooo! I have actually seen studies that suggest raising the speed limit will actually make roads safer because it is closer to the speed that 'most' drivers are traveling anyways.
....."The 55 mph national speed limit enacted in 1973 in response to the first Arab oil embargo was justified as a means of conserving fuel. In 1987, the law was changed to allow speeds up to 65 mph. But the Republican Congress elected in 1994 did few things more popular than repealing the limit altogether in 1995." I am starting think I more Republican... lOl http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704688604575125510326010610.html?m od=yhoofront ______

Yeah, and I am choosing to discuss what I read with other members on this forum. Got a problem with that? And could you hit return a few more times in your worhtless post?
Actually driving the speed limit reminds me of those 4 college students that held the entire flow of the I-285 traffic in Atlanta to the posted speed limit 55mph and the mess it created.. http://74.125.155.132/search?q=cache...&ct=clnk&gl=us

I hope the speed limit changes to 70, and 75 in the deserts.

I like this part of that article:
"....particularly in the case of the autobahn-burners German luxury brands sell...." and this: "....and the powerful cars consumers are buying suggest otherwise...."

I hope for special licensing where you need to prove you can "Drive".. and if you can (and pay) you get a special orange license plate that lets you, and only you (or other orange plate holders) drive in the far left lane at "ANY" speed. These are the kind of drivers that follow the rule, "if I am slower than the car behind me, move over".
While I'm dreaming... I wish teleporting would be invented so 95% of the current so called drivers (read: commuters) stop driving entirely. Driving will only be done by the passionate and properly trained. We wouldn't need speed limits if everyone on the road was focused, skilled and passionate. But then again cops need to make money somehow right. We all know many.. possibly most roads in America have speed limits posted well below the 86th%. Thats a whole separate issue. Back to my point.. if people used more brains and less ego while driving, speed would be much less a factor in relation to highway safety. Disrupting the flow of cars is what causes accidents.. not simply driving .. drum roll please.. Above the speed limit! Oh no! Drivers training in this country is a pathetic joke and driving should be a much harder privilege to earn. But thats just my opinion. If it wasn't for the complete morons on the highway I could cruse well above 100mph all day long in complete comfort. Thats because when I drive I DRIVE. I don't ever talk on my cell, eat, read or even have in-depth conversations. Driving is ALWAYS my top priority when I am behind the wheel. Most people don't do this. That our biggest problem. Sorry for the tangent.

There is no way that California is in the middle for the average highway speeds. With the exception of the 405 between LA and San Diego, the average highway speed has to be closer to 85mph.

I remember when Montana had "safe and prudent" speed limits a few years back before changing back to 75 again.
Used to travel there to visit family south of Bozeman along the I-90 and I must admit I was neither "safe" nor "prudent" in my travels |

Having lived in AZ, I am not surprised it is a green state. Combination of alot of fast exotic cars(Scottsdale) and great freeways equals guys with more money than brains doing 200mph runs on the 101.

"The argument for raising speed limits is fundamentally an argument for letting drivers use their own judgment."
Let Freedom Ring!!! That is the most succinct argument I have seen yet for higher speed limits. I love it!

Yep. I've had quite enough of the nanny state crap, but on the other hand I would like to see tougher driving requirements and mandatory jail time for driving w/o a license (which is a huge issue here in CA). If a driver passes a driving test that requires that they show some decent car-control skills then absolutely I'm all for letting them use their judgment to decide what a safe speed for them based on their skills and the type of car they're driving. A safe speed for the M3 is much higher than that of the average mid or large sized SUV (braking, stability, weight, etc.)--of course that varies too--the Cayenne isn't an average SUV. |
