can't go wrong with a diesel.

bought my wife a 2012 Jetta TDI - the car is paying for itself in terms of mpg

what kind of mileage is the TDI giving? is the real world number better than the estimates? I may consider one for my wife as well.

after break in period, it's pretty much as advertised (30 city 42 hwy mpg). My wife refills every 2 weeks or even longer depending on frequency of driving, traffic, etc.

OP, as a follow up, my friend wants to gauge what the recent/upcoming maintenance schedule will be.

Aside from engine oil, I understand the tranny was replaced at 60k and hence got new fluid at that time, when is it due next?

rear diff fluid?
Spark Plugs?
O2 sensors?
SMG software updates?

do you have OEM wheels?
how many miles on current tires, tires make and brand?

lol...if you read his first post, the tranny was not replaced, it was just the clutch which is typical for M5 SMGs.

no, not unless the OP asked for it.

the SMG for an e60 M5 is not like a DCT transmission where everything is internally lubricated in a cased unit with transmission fluid.

see here for e60 SMG, the clutch attaches external to the tranny:
