Does the DCT go into top gear while cruising around town?

Just curious, I've been putting it in 6th with the 6MT doing 35-40mph, simply nowhere to go in higher gear. I assume it's going to save fuel.

If you drive in D mode, it will go to 7th gear. I rarely use D, so I only hit 6th and 7th when I want to.

It depends on the drivelogic setting, but I've seen mine go into 7th at 35 mph.

Fixed

But yes, in D mode it seems to get up to 7th rather quickly regardless of the setting. I don't know that I've ever even tried D5 but in D4, it holds gears longer than in the lower D modes but still gets to 7th fairly quickly. If you don't want to be in 7th, use the S modes!

There is a reason it upshifts as quickly as it can in "D" and that's to save gas, it's not a "performance" oriented mode, even in D5, it just likes to downshift a lot

In D5 it will hold 6th up to about 55 - 60 mph. Then it grabs 7th. In all other modes it seems to get to 7th very early if you are off the gas. 35 mph sounds about right.

Why would you roll around in 7th? Highest I ever go around town is MAX 5th.

This is actually a problem that I have noticed since the purchase of DCT. When it's in D, even in D5 it quickly upshifts in normal driving when you are cruising at 30 or 40. This is very annoying since the car feels very underpowered and each time you want a little power you really have to step on the gas to force a downshift. I think most of us would rather have a "normal" automatic when in D mode instead of this ultra fuel saving mode. Or at least when its in D4 or D5, it should keep the car in 4th or 5th gear...

It is setup to get into 7th as quickly as possible to acheive the best results on the european emisions tests. Its a set test on a rolling road that is supposed to simulate both city and highway driving. The test must be conducted in the default setting for a car. This is why most new dct and auto cars are setup to start in automatic mode. Most manufactures carefully map the shift points to provide the best performance in these tests despite the fact they are not reflective of how the cars will be driven or perform on the road. Its also contributing to the decline of manual cars as they cannot be made to perform this test as efficently as a dct car can.

When I'm feeling el casuale, I drive in D3 and having the tranny go to 7 never bothers me. We don't always have to drive a race car m3, especially when trundling about town.

Shifting manually in S3 with a light foot on the gas, I can get my '09 Coupe to shift into 7th at 28 mph...lowest possible speed into 7th. It's crazy since the revs drop to about idle. I think a Prius could out-accelerate me at 28 mph in 7th.

I would ask you - Do you know what "Power" setting you have set up on your M Drive when you are driving? Is it Normal, Sport or Sport Plus?
The "Power" setting you put in your M drive screen is going to establish 2 things: 1) how far your foot has to travel on the accelerator to get engine RPMs up and 2) Where the shift points are going to be. "Sports Plus" selection makes it a race car because you, in effect, are telling the computer "I want to haul butt!"
If your D1 selection performs the same as your D5 selection then if I were you, I would go into the M Drive screen and make sure what power settings you have set up. It's possible you have selected "Normal" power for both D1 and D5. In which case the car will seem under powered because with "Normal" power" selected, your telling the computer "I,m in snow and I don't want my wheels to turn real fast right away."

LOL - I have ~12k miles on the car and have never used D; all the more odd since I used to have a tiptronic and never drove that manually since I was happy with the shift programs.

I wasn't afraid of the DCT having had that experience and expected to use the M3 DCT the same, but from the moment I got into the M3 I just started shifting manually ... it just felt right ... and I'm not even the least bit curious about 'd'.

If you put your MT car in 6th gear while doing 35-40, you should just castrate yourself and then then turn in your car for a used beater yugo. Serious. You are killing a beautiful car.

not entirely true as your now lugging the car around. Not to mention its much worse to lug the car rather than rev it a little higher (less strain on the rotating assembly)

The DCT shifts so quickly it's just natural to drive in manual mode all of the time. I love it.

I get annoyed when I'm in 6th and people slow down to 55-60 on the highway.

I tried driving in D1 today to save some gas (d.t. shortage) and it was in 7th gear while I was going 35-40.

After about 10 minutes, I couldn't handle it and pushed the M button for the rest of my commute. Whatever, I hear they're selling gas for sex on Craigslist.
