To paint
To paint or not to paint!
Here is my dilemma... My dealer scratched up my front bumper when removing the ugly license plate the day I bought my car. He promised me that they will repaint my front bumper for free. Here is the thing, my car is Jerez Black and as we all know (or not) it is a hard color to paint. I consulted my friend who is a body shop owner for years and he said.. do not do it, as they will never be able to come close to the stock color/shade, and it will bring me more grief then happiness. Another interesting thing.. I went to the dealer today to schedule an appointment with their body shop, but it turns out they wanted to have the job done by "Dent Fixers" or some other outside company that contracts with them. He took me over to those guys and basically they have a small tent setup instead of the paint booth and that is where they do small paint jobs on mostly used/lease returned cars.. I SAID NO WAY THEY TOUCHING MY 2k miles $68K M3. The funny thing is that when we spoke to "Dent Fixers" guys at the dealers they seems unsure if they can do the job.. they didn't even have the rigt paint in stock... When I raised the question of why they don't let their body shop do the job, they said.. they were only had the money have the job done by those outsiders... My idea was to have them paint my bumper and at the same time fill in those ugly yellow side marker holes.. so here is the question.. what would you do?? |

Don't let them touch it. Those people are not equipped with fixing metallic paint. It'll come out looking patchy.
If you have a burning desire to get that scratch fixed, do what you have said. Fill the reflector holes and repaint the ENTIRE bumper so that the metallic specks will look right. This is the problem of having metallic paint. Touch ups almost never come out right.

What pissed me off is them saying.. it will cost 3Gs to do in the body shop.. Like I care...
The good thing is I have a signed paper from the sales manager saying they will repair the damages... The guy got angry at me at the time I was buying the car, when I asked him to put it in writing that he will fix it... |

I have a shop.. My friends shop... and he said not to do it over two little scratches... he said that you will never be able to cure it the same as the factory paint... metallic is pain in the ass...
But shouldn't I get at least some sort of the compensation from them? Quote:

If you want to do it right and have the $$$, you could order an OEM bumper from Europe through one of the vendors on this site - it comes painted so you know it will be right. No plate holes or reflectors. Cost is upwards of $2k delivered. I wouldn't do the reflector fill-in method - sounds like a few others have had issues with that (see some recent posts.)

You have it in writing that the dealer will fix the damage. I would let them do it. If it doesn't turn out right, tell them. If they refuse to make it right, get estimates to do it right, including estimates for a new replacement.
Present the estimates to the dealer and give the dealer opportunity to pay for the estimate. Write a formal letter (registered) to the dealers General Manager, give the exact details of what has transpired, and what you want. Give 10 business days to respond. Then go to Small Claims Court and win. |

I had the same-ish thing happen - I watched one of the dealership service guys back my Silver Grey metallic E46 into another car. They of course said they'd re-paint it and foolishly I let them do it. Bad move. The color was never right...

Don't use those cheapos.
But usually airbrushing turns out well and I use the same guy all the time. He does excellent work especially on my silver cars. His name is Patrick and he is from SF. Automotive Touch-Up Company. Give him a call and show him the damage you got and see what he says... 415-806-3214 |

you cant follow factory formula from BMW, it will never match. My dad has been painting for 25 years and he says it depends on the painters ability to match by eye. he said AW is probably the biggest pain in the ass but he cool
