Thinking about picking up this M3.....

Hey guys,

Looking to get a new car (used) and came across this 2008 m3. Alpine white, black interior. Nav, reverse camera, moonroof, all the goodies. Its a 6sp. 63,000kms. US car, brought over to Canada. Mint shape, only one claim of $1500 (repainted bumper). Lady-driven, she wants to sell to get a SUV. She said her bottom dollar is $39k (CAD). Is this a good deal? Anything I should look for? Thanks in advance.

Seems like a decent deal, but Canadian members will know better.

Only thing is the '08 iDrive is much different/worse than newer years.

I'd say it's a pretty decent deal since all Canadian 08s are still going for low-mid 50s.
However, with that much of mileage, u might need to make sure whether u need new tires, brakes or not. Because 4 new ps2s will easily cost u $2000, and the brakes are not cheap either.

That is an excellent deal, make sure she has all the maintenance papers. I would insist to have an inspection made at BMW if I was you. If BMW finds something then have them repair it at her cost (i.e. asking price less the repair cost).

Also ask BMW if they would extend the warranty and how much this would cost you. By asking them that they will make sure to check the car real good.

This will give you a good report and a fantastic bargaining tool when you agree to the final price for the car.

Case in point, last year in March I sold my former M3 e46, BMW found a broken spring, once I had the BMW inspection report and had them replace the spring I got my asking price for the car.

It's that simple and will give you piece of mind. Good luck!

A good set of tires all 4 corners from TireRack will run him with tax about 1,300- It will most likely only require rear tires he should have BMW check this and let him know how many miles / KM are left on the front and rear tires ... this would be another bargaining tool to somewhat reduce the price.

OP. let us know how you make out and take some pictures.

I think he means parking sensors. The M3 doesn't come with a camera in e9x form.

Whoops guys, my bad I did mean parking sensors not reverse camera!

But good news! I picked up the car, got a great deal!

Funny, I pretty much did exactly as you guys recemended.

Cons: It is originally a US car (she brought it up), yes your right, tires do need to be replaced, very soon (thanks for the tire rack tip, ill check that website out). I did find out about extended warranty, but its super expensive, i'm not even sure if its worth it or not because it only does offer minimal coverage, example, an extra 3 year 120,000km (total) warranty will run me about $5000-5500. 2 year 100k extended is about $3500. Its funny, as soon as you go passed 100kms the warranty starts to get insanely expensive, almost as if they know something will go wrong around the 120-160km mark. Its through BMW but they use a third party company called Coverage One.

Pros: Since it has the US warranty the brakes are actually covered as long as I just drive over the boarder and get it serviced there, Seattle BMW for example. I was shocked my self, brakes otherwise cost $2500-$3000 here, in the US as long as your under the 4year warranty and the certain miles, they are covered.

I really am in love with this bimmer, she's great. I was thinking about getting all the chrome on the car painted gloss black (wheels, grill, emblems, tips, side grills), has anyone seen this on an alpine white m3 before? I also don't like the non-tinted windows, I feel like a fish in a fish bowl. Even though its illegal in Canada to get your windows tinted, I might get them very lightly tinted, just like my last bimmer.

Sorry for the repost guys, but since you are so helpful I had another question. What tires should I even be looking for? ( I got the 19's). What are the best tires for this car? I will be driving it all year long (not in snow though obviously). Should I get the original set again? Im from Vancouver, BC, so it does rain pretty often. Thanks!

Happy you got a good deal.

Re: paint I don't recommend it, it will peal and you be sorry you did it.

Re: Tires, this depends on your finances. do go to TireRack.com and enter your car info then select the tire that will meet your pocket book.

Michelin tires and Continental are good quality tires (I use them on my cars), do read the reviews. Check the sizes on your car before you go on line to check so you have the info handy.

If the front tires are still good then get only the two rear tires, however, make sure you do order the same type you have on the front (mixing tires BRANDS is not recommended).

As for tires in your area have a read on this winter tire guide, it will guide you if you should use a winter set depending how low your temperature gets in the winter time .... Check out this site here ----> CLICK to Open the Site

I recommend one or the other below for summer tires

Congrats and pics please!
I'm from Vancouver, too. I might see your car around before.
For the tires, the original equip was Michelin PS2, great tires. But in our raincouver, I suggest u try the vredestein ultrac sessanta, they are really amazing in both wet and dry condition. Probably not as much grip as PS2s in dry, but definitely feels better in wet. I got a set for my e46 m3 and they just amazed me, and the cost is just about half of a set of PS2s.
Please do not paint the grills/gills, just go get some oem gloss black grills. Or take a look at the for sale section, lots of vendors sell them.
Good luck!

I'd go with Michelin Pilot Super Sports. I'd opt for slightly wider than stock. 255 and 275.

Uh, I really hate to rain on anyone's parade, but you posted a question and bought the car one day later. You bought a high mileage car that had been in an accident with a 6 spd from a woman (really question the life of the clutch and the state of the 2nd gear syncro) with worn out tires that are going to cost you at least $1500 (by the time you mount and balance), without a warranty. Hard to imagine how this car was a bargain. Now, I really only speculate here, but if you register the car in Canada and try to bring it down to the US for service, I really wonder if BMW will honor it. If it's an '08, when was it delivered? Not much warranty left, it would seem.

I do wish you the best with the car. For others on the board, it is a good place for advice prior to a purchase - use it to get some feedback before making a move.

a 3 year old M3 ridden by a canadian lady....

if you could interview her it would be nice so you can acquire info about

the car. First question would be why did a lady like you bought the M3?...

IF the answer indicates a motivated woman, it could be that she took care of it..
if its someone who doesn't know what its doing.. I don know...

Overall sounds like a bad idea though

too much of a risk to put 39K I'd never do it on any used M3

unless if my grandpa was driving it (i.e.: If I had guarantee there was no abuse)

Pretty sure you can't have front window tint in BC. None at all.

63,000k is high milage for a 08'? Notice, 63k kilometres, not miles. Works out to be just average.

Yes it does have an accident. Just under $1,500, bumper repainted by BMW dealer because the bottom was scraped a little, have pictures and everything.

And yes BMW US does honour the warranty.

The previous owner took great care of the car, literally looks and even smells new still.

Yeah I am just going to purchase the OEM parts and just swap it all out.

I had been looking for an M3 for a little while now, I purchased the car right away because to my knowledge I did get a decent deal, all other M3's were priced around $45-50k.

Thanks for the help guys, ill probably just go for the PS2's again.
