ZL1 @ WSIR

Drove a bone stock ZL1 at Willow Springs International Raceway. Only got to do 3 laps, 1 of those was a warm up. Ran a 1:33:4.

Very impressive for a 100% stock car IMO. Fastest I have my boss302 is 1:32:8 with springs, sways on RS3 tires for some comparison. I think Steve Millen ran 1:36 in a bone stock M3. The ZL1 is very planted, and the interior is pretty nice IMO. A little dull to drive, just so smooth. Lol

I'm not a domestics guy but the ZL1 is legit. If it wasn't so enormous, I'd be more interested.

I agree. Just look at it next to the Boss 302 in the pic above. The Camaro seems unnecessarily bulky for what it is. And with the enormous wheel wells, it only looks right with 20" wheels, which obviously aren't very track friendly. Camaros I see at the track and on televised Continental Challenge series races run on 18" wheels, and they look downright silly, kind of like a lowrider on 13s.

Thanks for posting your impressions, OP.

It was only 0.6s faster, the 302 was on a modified suspension with RS3 tires, and he only had the Camaro for 3 laps!!! Give the man time to get use to the car and I bet the Camaro is faster than the 302.

I agree, the zl1 would befaster on most tracks but I'd putty money on the boss 302 near the end of the session after heat soak and the extra weight takes its roll on the tires and brakes on the zl1

Randy Pobst did a 1:27.67 in a stock 2011 M3 6 speed and a 1:22:7 in a Camaro SS 1LE with it's 285 square set up and magnetic ride control.

A 1:33 is about 4 seconds off what he did in an 11' V6 Mustang with the track pack, assuming we are talking about the same track

You're talking about streets of willow (different track at willow springs). I ran willow springs (WSIR). Steve Millen ran a 1:36 in an M3 at willow springs.

So i'd assume Willow Springs International is just slightly longer? The videos of him running those times lack description just "Willow Springs"

They are actually different courses. Willow Springs has many different tracks within their facility. Each track is designed to test different things. There's a high power track, small tight courses and others.

I'd disagree. There's 2-3 seconds in a E9x M3 just by going to a square set up and putting on stickier rubber. (275 or 285 square wheels and tires and some RS3's or RE11's) given a 1:40 ish lap times to start with (Road Atlanta for example). The reason I believe this is because I am a PCA, BMWCCA, SCCA, NASA instructor and i've had lots of seat time in various ones. They push bad in stock form, like every M3 except the E30 M3 and the E36 M3 for the 94-95 model years.

Also...

An M3 is a 340-350whp / 260wt car
A Boss is a 390+whp/350+ wt car

They weigh the same, so the Boss has a significant power to weight advantage and even more significant torque to weight advantage.

Laguna Seca Raceway is a good example to get my point across.
That track favors power, big power with it's long sweeping corners. Here the 13' GT 500 beat the 13' ZL1, but on more complex courses we are seeing the opposite due the Chevy's grip and suspension advantage. Point is, cars with more power typically have the edge here.

The Laguna Seca Boss with it's big splitter and X-Brace back seat ran a 1:41.06 to the M3's 1:42.96. Again on a track that favors power we have a 1.9 second difference but the M3 was without ZCP and had Pilot Sport 2's (circa 2004, ew..) compared to the Boss' PZero Corsa's. Doing something as simple as having a ZCP car with better factory tires like Pilot Super Sports or Corsa's even would drastically change the time for the M3 probably by a second or even more. That's a pretty small spread between the two cars

My point, the cars are pretty close given the circumstances. You can't go wrong with either one. Both are faster then the CTS-V they tested in 2009 and have 3-4+ seconds on the Evo/Sti/Nismo 370Z scene with the same driver
