CLS 63 V M5 V GTR (keeping the m3)
Hey guys,
EDIT : may be makes more sense to sell the m3 if buying any of these, no point keeping it, which may make it smarter to buy smtg like a 911 gts or smtg, confused. just doesnt make sense to leave it in the garage, its not an exotic or anything. I am seriously toying with the idea of getting a new car, but keeping the M3 - I still love it. Originally, I just intended to sell it and get a gt3 when i was ready and still track oriented - that seems to be fading away, lack of time and opportunity, etc....so driving a gt3rs to work and downtown to track 4 days a year is pointless to me, and even somedays my m3 gives me back pain, getting in and out and just sitting for hours - bad lower back...and i am a luxury and tech snob, so i miss the toys of other luxo big cars. Anyways, I was thinking that the performance and driver feel of the new bigger cars is getting so close to the smaller performance oriented cars with less sacrifice that maybe it would be a welcome change - thoughts? We have a 2010 cls63 PP, and i really do love it aesthetically and in and out, and completely different driver feel. I prefer my M to the 2010 - i heard the new one is improved, i also barely drive the cls at home. anybody have experience with the new CLS? and how it drives v the m3? We have a 2011 Panamera - so thats why i am not considering a turbo Pan, also dont think thats for me, though i think it drives and handles better than our cls. If you were keeping your M3 (manual gearbox here), which car of the above would you want to add and why? I would take the M to the track and not the new car (unless gtr)...i would drive both on the daily and probs store the M in the winter... oddly, what gave this thought process a kick in the pants was somebody backing into my M pretty hard late last night and leaving with no note, banging up the hood and bumper pretty damn good.... thanks a lot, its not a V. thread, more a thoughts thread and if you feel that somebody who loves the small and nibble driver feel of the m3 will be dissatisfied with a new M5/cls on the daily...just seems like a more appropriate car...also, I am young , so looking for a more age appropriate and fun car... thanks a lot

A nice balance between luxury, comfort, and yet with full track capabilities when needed. You also already have a bigger luxury performance car in the Panamera so you dont need another one of those.

As much as the CLS63 is a fast beast, it is completely different than the M3 and not anywhere near as much fun IMO. I have druven one on the track and it was surprisingly capable for a big car but it was big and felt heavy to me and not edgy enough. I would get bored of it as a daily but that is just me.
What about an M5? I don't know why that seems like a better compromise to me but it does. Having said that, I found the M3 to be a great and comfortable daily car and I would take it over the others you mention if for no other reason than it is a bit edgier and fun and doesn't feel like a big boat. All subjective.

The young-young affluent guys are jumping into GT-Rs. If you have the money, give it a go. I'm assuming you don't have a wife and kids, so save the big cars for later in life. I can see two major out comes from buying a GT-R, either you love it and enjoy it very much OR it further develops your desire for a GT3. The thing about Porsches is that they appear as older guys car, 40+ for 911s. The GT-R is the "NOW" car and would make a great addition to the M3.

OP for me right now, the dream garage for me is a Cayenne turbo + bypass and tune for 600hp, GTR + mid pipe and tune for 600-650hp, and a GT3RS unmolested.
So in your situation, I would get either a GTR or GT3/RS. Either something that is extremely fast (GTR) or extremely alive (GT3/RS). |

Buy an Audi R8 5.2 V10 and call it a day. It's the ultimate supercar daily driver and it's an amazing overall car. I would opt for the 6 speed manual though, I have test driven both the auto and manual versions of the car and had a blast with the 6 speed, and a horrible time with the clunky auto tranny.

Niqui... Sorry to hear about your M3
Heres another thought.... You want one car that is an all around fun car that you can bring to the track and get around easily in our winters.... The RS5 is finally coming to Canada. I would seriously consider this as the one car. Or.... Trade in your 08 for a new one with the competition package. I drove one last week with DCT on the road in front of CANBEC dealership. You know how bumpy that road is. The new suspension on comfort setting is AMAZING! It's active as opposed to the old EDC that was a fixed setting. A last option... Keep your current M3 till the new M3 comes out. At your age... I would pass on the BIG cars like the CLS or the M5. Whatever you get... I'm down for coming by your place and checking it out.

Hey guys, thanks for all the input....
Honestly didnt even think of the r8, but its just way too flashy for me, and not practical...i could drive a 911 in the canadian winter, r8 no...gt3rs no i guess also, but the supercar flash is not what i want at this point, at least with work, etc and my situation. going to go try the new c2s 991 this week/next week to see how it drives, and try the new gtr....and report back, if others of you are curious. the new gt3 is 2014 ish according to my dealer, which i guess kills that, or says to wait for it, but also, seems like overkill for somebody like me, who really hasnt tracked all year. rs5 - personally, i am anti-audi, i have no good reason, just dont like them the more thought ive given to the m5/cls has become along ur lines, i dont think its in my age group... thanks for all the help, im in no rush, and probs would be best if i didnt find something i loved more than the M for a mix of DD and fun car... thanks a lot guys

The m5 really isnt that big... I think its back seats are absolutely useless. I am 6"5 and people cant sit behind me unless they are midgets. People kick the shit out of my doors getting in and out of the back seat its so cramped. I dont get the point of the 5 series anymore.
I have seen some ridiculous baller CLS Mercedes out here in Southern California. I dont know what you guys are smoking on age group. That is the car of choice out here for every attorney and CEO under 30. Or so it seems.

have never driven an m3, but had an e60 m5 and now i have a 2012 cls63, and i can tell you if its handling and driving experience youre into, forget the cls63
even the e60 m5 handles WAY better. CLS is a boat. and feels as heavy as a tank when you drive it. no agility, and really makes its size known. mushy throttle response too. ive only had it a week or so and im bored with it already. really wish id have test drove one first, but they dont allow test drives on these types of cars where i live. |

OP, whatever it is, dont let go of your M3. I got the F10 M5, but my love for my E92 M3 hasn't diminish one bit. In fact, it's so hard to let go of it. Even the 991 C2S couldn't lure me away. It would take a very special car, something smaller, much sharper, and sounds at least as good as my M3 to make me jump ship.

OP: Lol, I am going through the same ordeal right now for the most part with a thread right next to yours (http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=704756)
I have driven in the last two weeks a 2012 991 911S, a 2012 650i (as close as I can get to the new M6 until it comes out), 2012 Jaguar XKR-S, 2011 GTR, and a 2012 Maserati Granturismo S. Its a hard decision and seems, for me, that there is not a car out that I don't have to make some kind of compromise on when comparing it to my 2011 E90 M3. The M3 is legitimately such a good car, its hard to beat! |

I would probably go with a GTR since you have already experienced MB, BMW, Porsche. Give it something different to try and GTR shouldn't be a disappointing option in any ways. Just my $0.02
