BMW colors used by other brands or is it the other way around?

anyone knows why the colors offered by BMW are used by other brands on their cars. for example ASTON MARTIN offers azurite and carbon black and HONDA seems to have montecarlo blue for some time now. theres a vague memory of a MERCEDES color shared by BMW but I dont recall which one it was

Other brands steal our colors, but at least they have the decency to leave the orange peel exclusive to BMW.

Just because the color has the same names, doesn't mean it is the same color. You'll find that different manufacturers like to make paints unique to their brand.

I doubt most people even care or know what the color is called. It is just black, white, grey, red etc.

ZK, that may be the case with a lot of car companies but those azurite and carbon black from aston martin look exactly like the ones bmw uses. maybe some kind of special relationship or deal between the companies?

Realize that BMW does not make the paint, they buy it from a supplier who also supplies paints to car makers around the world. I would think when a color like Carbon Black is first introduced by BMW, they have some exclusivity agreement with the paint manufacturer for a certain time period that then expires allowing sales to other car makers. But I could be wrong about that!

I really doubt it. You'd really have to ask a body shop to truly know if it is identical. They are probably minutely different. Some more metallic flake or a different hue mixed in etc.

It's probably more like the manufacturer saying "That looks good, lets make a color like that".
