290 HP. Audi's answer to the 335?

This will be Audi's new top of the line V6. The 3.0 TFSI. Which is a supercharged V6 making 290 HP and about 310 TQ. Not sure if its US bound, or when its available, but this should prove to be some interesting competition for the e90. What do you guys think?

I think if that's the case it better be rated ultra super conservatively. 290HP is nothing too impressive these days. It needs to be more like 350. Unless they've managed to knock about 1500lbs off the new A4 then it might be enough.

I think the next S4 is going to have 350hp. The next gen S4 is going to have a tuned version of the new V6.

Actually being an ex Audi S4 owner I still frequent the AudiWorld S4 forums. Audi is now positioning the B8 S4/S5 as the direct competitor to the 335i. S4will be supercharged V6 but 330+ HP. A4/A5 will have the 290hp and is probably pitted against the 328i. Not sure if the S5 will retain the V8 or go supercharged.

Isn't the current version S4 like 340hp already? I know the one I drove felt kind of sluggish and it cost @$8K more than my comparably equipped 335.

Doesn't seem to make much sense to me as far as being a direct competitor.

I think they're soliciting us because I got a audi drive experience thing in the mail, yet when I went to register, it's all filled-up. Introduces the 2k9 A4 and will let you drive with a pro driver, also the 328xi and IS250. Scared of the 335i I suppose. Even though their even would showcase a nose-heavy essentially FWD car, I'd do it because it's free! That's probably why it's filled!

Guys, my point was that Audi is upping the HP from their current 255 HP offering. I was not saying that I thought 290 HP was super high.

I was saying that this is good for Audi because they will be positioning the a4 (if engine is offered for that car) in the the same HP range as the 335.

B7 s4 has 340 HP.

Not sure how 290 HP would be pitted against the 328 if it has 230?

I think we are all pretty aware that the 335 while rated at 300hp it is pretty conservatively rated. What I was getting at is since Audi's are traditionally heavier and have higher drive line losses with quattro they better be even more conservative on their rating if it is truly intended to compete with a 335.

I agree it's a step in the right direction for them though. IMO their V6 and 2.0T have always been too close to one another power wise. When the smaller engine is just a chip away from the same power with better torque and fuel economy that can't be good for the "higher" version's sales.

Yea, I agree that it is a step in the right direction for Audi.

2.0T = 200, 3.2 = 250 Difference of 50
328 = 230, 335 = 300 Difference of 70

Since 250 HP for the 3.2 is not close to the ballpark for the 300 in the 335, it almost seems like a segment mismatch. Competition is "supposed" to be 328 vs 2.0T and 335 vs 3.2. But since the HP is lacking on Audi's end, the next car up the line that competes with the 335 is the S4. (unfortunately its like 5-10 grand more!)

My last car was an A4 2.0T, and I loved it, but Audi's gotta get their SH together in that dept.

might be worth it but audis are heavy pigs like G37's, even heavier than G37's. i have hopes for nissan to turn their VQ37VHR to pump more torque/hp. but man they all are heavy pigs

heavy pigs 290 seems like a step in the wrong direction. if it is a 335i competitor, there is no reason audi shouldn't have topped the 300/300 of the BMW with a newer engine unless there is bigtime weight loss.

they probably thinking "oh we got more torque" lol
if they did shave weight then that would be THE right step in the right direction. fuel efficiency and weight reduction is what all cars need

Yea, Audi's are heavy no doubt. But supposedly they have repositioned the engine in the A4 so that the weight is more evenly distributed. We'll see this fall when the B8 hits stealers.

I thought the only car this engine has officially been spoke about is for the A6 and it's it that will be getting the 290hp output. The S4 is to get the same engine but no official comfirmation on this or output figures.

I would have thought that if the S4 gets this engine even no other in the A4 range will be offered it.

I believe you have the comparisons correct, just don't know where the S5 fits in. BTW current S4 is rated at 340 HP and is slower than the 335i. B8 S4 will be rated around the same . Current S5 is rated at 354 HP. IMHO, the current 335i is ACTUALLY about 330 HP give or take, based on performance figures as compared to the 333 HP E46 M3

I actually went to the Audi Driving Experience yesterday at the Infineon Raceway in Sonoma. I drove the new B8 A4 3.2 Quattro, 328xi, C300 4 matic and the IS250 AWD. Figures they put a 265hp A4 against the less powered competition. All in all, the new A4 looks really good inside and out and is a good size bigger than the outgoing B7 A4. Handles decently but not as good as the 328xi and I also got to drive the A4 for 5 laps around the Infineon race track. Props to Audi for allowing us to basically drive the living daylights of their cars and their competition's as well as being able to test it on a real race track. The best part is it's free and I also got a free A4 hat, although I got more goodies from Lexus when I went to their performance driving academy that featured the IS-F.

That sounds like quite the event! Did the B8 feel like it was more evenly balanced than generations past?

If it performs anything like the S5 against the S4 then the answer has to be yes, but there is an underlining consistency to the way Audi's behave which is ultra safe, understeer is always present when pushed really hard but as normal it's only really seen on a track.

I think the A4 will be a great addition to the ever improving Audi line up.
