M3 Convertible - NOT retractable hardtop or ragtop? kevlar CF instead

source: http://www.autospies.com/news/Spies-...le-news-12081/

the BMW M3 will be "employing a fully retractable carbon fiber kevlar roof, in order to get the highest performance AND functionality."

Interesting bit of info if BMW can pull it off.

I saw that ragtop article at another forum and my thoughts is that I like it if it saves 400lbs from its estimated 4000lbs hardtop model.

or better make people choose is IMHO

heh, good idea but if you want the "highest" performance like you stated, you shouldn't be getting convertible in first place.

THE highest performance car - M3 hardtop
the "highest" performance car - M3 convertible

that's how i see it.

No way.

The current credible rumor is that the normal M3 will not have a CF roof. (One supposed reason for this is to further differentiate the higher model M6 from the M3.) There is no way BMW would go to the expense of developing a cf retractable roof if the normal version will not even have a fixed cf roof.

I posted this announcement some time ago on Car SpyShots before I was banned for some reason

But at BMW we test everything to find the solution for our requirements.
The original testing prototypes of the E93 were engineered using various options and configurations - We used conventional canvas roof , Carbon Fibre, Aluminium , magnesium before settling on the lightweight steel used on the production E93.

The decision day is fast approaching to which material will be used to accomodate the M3 Cabrio , BMW are requiring an offset to weight similar like the M6 Cabrio which will not cause severe penalty on the M3 dynamics. even though our studies show that the M3 Cabrio are mainly bought for looks than for outright performance.

Why not? Cabrios are generally heavier than coupes to start with! Also to maintain 50 50 weight the lighter the retractable roof the lower the weight shift.

Why? Because according to the insiders on the various forums, BMW will not position the M3 cab above the M6 cab in terms of technology. The same is true of the M3 coupe vs M6 coupe.

correct me if wrong but the M3 is potentially going to have flexray! i dont think the M6 has this! bmw is about more than marketing, surely there is a lot to do with development and if this means new technology i'm sure they are not going to wait until the next generation of 3 series before introducing new things.

Yes, it will have Flexray AFAIK, but that is already in the new X5, and I question how much of a difference Flexray makes in this application, but we'll see.

I don't really care if the cab has a cf roof (no intention to get the cab, I'm a coupe guy), but it would be nice to see an unexpected feature such as a cf or kevlar roof anyway. It just seems like a lot of the more extreme features we have discussed in the past are falling by the wayside as release of the concept get closer. It appears that the car will have 426hp, at least in EU tune, rather than 440-450. Latest news seems to be no cf roof for the normal coupe, no HUD, and possibly no EDC.
