from what i read, it says cut production, not eliminate altogether. phasing out implies that there will be no v8's, which i don't think would be a very good move on bmw's part as there will be always be a market for more powerful bimmers. i mean, just imagine a world with only v6 7 series...it wouldn't happen! do you think benz would ever stop making a v8 S class, etc.?

Yeah, they aren't going to stop making I6s, no way. What, only V6s and 4bangers would be in the lineup?
Not gonna happen.....more likely that they will be running on hydrogen then they won't exist.

Yeah I read the article too. They did include the I6 as an engine that could be phased out or at least utilized on a much much smaller scale. Surprising I know.
However, this is good news for us V8 M3 owners. We will have a pretty rare BMW. However, a small lightweight 4cyl M3 could be awesome. Jason

To be more environmental-friendly in one of their largest markets, all manufacturers are doing this. Look at the upcoming B8-chassis Audi S4. It will be a supercharged V6 to phase out the normally aspirated V8 currently found in the B7-chassis S4. I'm not surprised if BMW follows suit in their //M cars since they're already doing it with the rest of their lineup (X6, next 7-series, etc are all lower displacement with forced induction)

I would hate to see BMW lose their naturally aspirated engines for smaller FI engines. I hate the fact that we can't have lightweight cars (I.E. E30) any more. And if they can't go lightweight, then FI is the only answer.

Donīt believe in this BS story. They need those V8s for the X5 M and X6 M ( maybe next gen M5 ). So no problem with the V8s. Donīt believe everything you read .... Best Regards, Maika

That being said we may be going into an era like the 80's where sports cars look the business but are underpowered.... Jason

V8s going?
The new 7 is coming out with the X6's turbo V8. I think the demise of the V8 is greatly overstated.
