How come they wear shorts on the assembly line, but you'll never see a German caught dead in shorts anywhere else? They'd rather wear their jeans to the park and then peel them off and sit around nude than wear shorts, I swear . . . .

2013 here also and the same happened to me with 400 miles on the car. Currently at ~600 miles. Mine did this twice on cold starts....rough idle, also DSC malfunction. Went away with restart. Figured it was idle control valve because my 2009 E90 M3 did the exact same thing (at around 3000 miles) and YEP, dealer pulled the codes last week and that appears to be the issue.

The weird thing is that on my 2009, they went ahead and replaced the part (I had car back same day). This time, they just cleared the codes. So now I'm waiting for it to happen again...

Very expensive. Which is probably why they looked hard at everything else.
My dealer called me and they told me they ordered a new DME. I hope its the software only... The engine itself would be bad as one thing could lead to another.

Is the dealer the only way to read these error codes?

Just take comfort in the fact that your car is still under warranty. Chances are its something simple. Worst case you need a new engine like I did!

what happened to yours? the design on the s65 is pretty solid, bmw finally got rid of the independent vanos system that caused the total engine failures on the s85

Don't really want to crash the OP thread so long story short, after having lots of parts changed out and scoring on a cylinder wall my engine was replaced. Same malfunction along with increased emissions. You can read about in the mechanical section under "Not a great start to my M3 ownership."

I saw a 60ish year old german man swimming naked in a hotel pool in the middle of the day at an expensive resort near Berlin. Still gives me shivers when I think about that.
