haha i have a 17-40L already so dont really need the 17-55. Although if i could do it all over again, 17-55 > 17-40. The cost is insane though :sad0147:

Your missing out on the f/2.8 and IS unit. The 17-55 is a Japanese L lens in disguised to be marked as a regular lens. Which is why it is one of the hottest selling lens.

Walk around lens and somewhat wide angle.

I just bought the 17-55. It also has a decent F stop and has IS (Image Stabilization).

They say the glass in this one is comparable to the L series. From the reviews I've read...

"Decent" F-stop. It's a 2.8 what more can you want? It's probably the best F-stop "L" lens out there.
The 17-55 is amazing for low light shooting, it has an image stabilizer and low f-stop for all around shooting. I think every professional has this lens as a primary for a walk around lens.

Also sigmas... are not that great. They have a nice price but the lens is not as great as the canons.

Heres a review.

Heres a 17-55 vs 17-40L

Sorry to say but the 17-55 kills the 17-85. It's a 77mm and is twice as long as your 17-85 when fully zoomed out to 55.
Although the 17-85 is a pretty good lens it lacks in fstop.

Heh, thanks. I don't know too much about Lenses out there, still learning.

Just thought since my fixed Canon lens had a lower f-stop there would be lower wide angle IS lens' out there. Guess not.

Yea I love the lense ... as its a great walk around lense but yea the f5.2 or what ever isnt low enought for real creative out of focus background shots. ... my next two lenses are:

-Canon Zoom Super Wide Angle EF 16-35mm f/2.8L
-Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS Image Stabilizer USM

Go 70-200mm. Anything with a low f stop is expensive.
Lower the fstop the more light that can enter the lens, thus allowing you to use a lower ISO and minimizing noise in your photos. Also allows for more background light to enter, thus capturing a background that you cannot normally see with lenses that have a higher fstop.
The IS unit is definately a keeper. 10/10 shots with IS on in low light conditions were better than 10/10 shots I took with IS off.
the 70-200 is good for sport shots, I might pick one up later on.

Find someone who works @ Canon. They have an employee bi-annual sale. I picked up my 580ex II for $241 (Refurb). The 430EX is really cheap, mid 100s. The sale ends like Jan 2.

Sorry, it's too late for me to hit him up for more, I ordered quite a bit.

All good ... Costco is selling them and their main warehouse is out of so cal so I should get in 1-2 days ... same price.

Also thanks to Excellence for helping me save $100 on the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Autofocus Lens!!! as I picked that up with the Bogen / Manfrotto 190MF4 Magfiber Carbon Fiber 4-section tripod, a lens hood for my 17-85mm lenses, and a 77mm UV Hoya Filter for the new lens!
