Modded OEM Exhaust (Video Inside)
I finally completed modding my OEM exhaust. Here is a video for your listening pleasure. I am very pleased with the result. There is NO drone when cruising.
Here are some pics of the modification work I did. I used exhaust clamps and stuffed all of the fiberglass packing material back in before I had the muffler welded shut. I used an angle grinder to cut the muffler cans open. I found that after fitting the clamps I really needed to use 2 on one side and one and a half on the other as the perforated area is longer on one side by about an inch and a quarter or so. Rather than ordering an extra clamp for the other side I got a small piece of stainless steel sheet metal which I rolled like a tube and put over the perforated pipe. I then put my last remaining exhaust clamp over that to secure it all. This second pipe is straight so it worked. In this one you can really see how tight the clamp is over the perforated pipe. You can see the outline of the change in diameter as well as the outline of the perforations and this is pretty beefy stainless steel. It is just a very tight fit. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...%2028%20PM.jpg

Thanks guys! Credit for the idea goes to "periokid". Again, I could not be happier with the result. I think this is a great alternative to paying $2,000-$5,000 for an aftermarket exhaust.

Nice to see another kouki fan! I love the s14! Most fun car I have ever owned. It is my track car. Blew the motor at VIR 6 weeks ago though and it is currently being rebuilt

Thanks! I highly recommend this mod. I will keep everyone updated on how the exhaust clamps hold up.

Yeah the cats are still in. The only thing I modded was the muffler. The rest of the exhaust is stock.

great job man...so you wouldn't be able to use the single clamp + sheet metal on the two clamp side because of the bend?

Yeah that was my rationale. Using 2 clamps (one on each side of the bend) sealed off that side better. Also the side with the two clamps and the bend has a longer section of perforations than the side where I just used one single clamp and the sheet metal. In fact when I measured, it looked like 2 clamps might actually have trouble fitting side by side on that side, so I went with one large clamp and sheet metal.

Just wanted to check in and give an update.
So it has been about 6 months and so far so good. Everything seems to be holding up well!

Sounds nice....I did the same thing to my exhaust, but I cut the pipes and replaced them with straight pipes instead of using clamps I was kind of worried that the clamps mite not hold up...it's a good sounding exhaust no drone which is great and has that high pitch sound that I love...but now I am looking to go with the uuc corsa system which seems to have the same sound but cleaner and a bit more high pitch. That's the idea I am getting threw the videos and price seem pretty good compared to the rest of the things out there.

Sounds like one of these buzzing four cylinder civics IMHO.
But if you like it good for you! |

You have to hear it in person and under load. Sounds nothing like a civic. Most people that hear it liken it to a v8 ferrari. Believe it or not I get compliments on it all the time.

I gotta find that girl! haha. Someone mentioned that ssII to me a few months ago because my friends thought it was me and were giving me crap for not acknowledging them. A girl at work drives a black zcp e92 but haven't seen that ssII zcp. I suppose that's what I get for only driving to/from work!
It probably took you an afternoon to do that correct? I've contacted a few shops here in cville to see if they can replace the perforated pipe with a solid pipe but they look at me funny and say they won't do it or my favorite... they'll do it but their welder didn't show up for work haha. When/where do you guys meet up? I would love to hear it in person. The only other m3 that I've heard is the local service advisor Adam's e92 with his eisenmann race that sounds sick |
