$30K Budget, E46 M3 or E92 335i?

Hey there guys. Quick question. I'm looking to get into another BMW soon. I sold my 335 coupe about a little over a year ago and can't wait to get back into another one. Financial reasons forced the sale but I'm ready to make another buy.

So, that being said. My heart says go with the 335 again just because it's newer and I guess you can say better in some aspects of styling. There is a little piece of me that wants to try the ///M though. I've always wanted an M3, and really wanted one before the E9X series though. I like the styling of the 335i better once you have some money into them, but really enjoy the look of the stock M. If you guys had 30k, what would you go for? They will both be used, the M3 being a 2006 and the 335 being a 2007. Both MT, hate auto boxes.

Let me know you think, just trying to get some ideas from fellow enthusiasts. Thanks!

that's kind of a hard question. The M3 will be a better track machine for sure, the 335 will rival it for speed and will be more comfortable.

so I'd say, if you intend on tracking often, M3

If you wanna cruise around and enjoy some power, 335

you have owned a 335 already. i say drive the m3 and compare. the fact that
you have a reasonable amount of seat time should be enough to convince you
one way or the other.

+1 about the warranty. The M def will fun, but remember, it is now 4 yrs old. I would do a 335 again. Newer, quicker, more comfortable, and it's not a generation old already

I'd go 335i, but it also depends on what particular cars you find.

I was in the same boat a few years back. I had an 01 M3, then got a 06 330i. Missed the M3, so sold the 06 330i and went back to an 05 M3. Happy with my decision as the M3 was better looking and a ton more fun for me.

just my $.02

Get the 335. Don't go back to the past, go forward.

If you like luxury, get another 335i. If you want a driver's car, and the most modifiable car on the planet, get the M3. I'm a man, so M3 for me. Engine is amazingly rewarding. M3 could use a BBK, suspension upgrade, and mild engine tune to be the perfect all purpose bang-for-the-buck sports coupe. 335is are a dime a dozen and offer no real passion and lasting appeal. It'll soon be just another 3 series.

Most would trade their left arm for a mint E30 M3. As desirable as that car is, by today's standards its performance advantage over comparable cars (old and new) has been completely erased. That isn't to say the car isn't still highly desirable and respected. The E46 M3 is the same, but the 335i still doesn't match the overall performance...especially at high speeds and high rpms where M cars come alive and non-Ms run for cover.

M3 all the way....

In my area there is a 2001 E46 M3 with 14,000 miles.... It looks in perfect condition and I'm drooling each time I stumble over the sales ad.

I'd go with the 335i for sure. Slap on some vortsteiner goodies, bbs LM-Rs, KWV3, chip, exhaust and a tune and you got yourself one kickass machine. And its a current car which is always nice.

No brainer. You already had a 335, get an E46 M3.

I went from a E92 335 to an E46 M3 before getting the E92 M3. I didnt regret it one bit. If you are looking to have the NEW car and the easy to tune for straightaway speed, get a 335.

If thats not a concern to you, get an M3. The two cars are close to eachother with straightaway speeds. But, you will not get the same thrill from a 335 that you will from an M3.

So, what are you looking for... Stats or Feel? Because when you push the two, the rush and feel of the E46 M3 is not debatable.

+1
just make sure you get the good ol' 6MT, i am a little worried about the longevity of SMG in e46.. when i drove it, it was REALLY jerky and i didn't feel like it was shifting "that" fast.
also take a look at the infamous subframe issue on the e46 m3s

From someone who just turned in a 335 for a 2010 E90 M3:
335 is a great car fast enough to get you in trouble with a smile on your face.
But the M is a race car.

I'm surprsided you can pick up a used 335i as cheaply as an E46 M3. I thought they were going for significantly more than the previous version M3.
