How to rid of orange peel?

So I had finished polishing my car using some of meguires products.. Started with wash n clayed car them used M105 w/ yellow pad then M205 w/ orange pad, M show car glaze then M26 yellow wax. All using a porter cable DA. Alot of the swirl marks n small scratches came out but still with orange peel.. Not a glass smooth surface. Is a wet sand needed or a more abrasive initial polish?

Polishes won't remove orange peel in any amount to be able to notice the difference. Only through wet-sanding can you remove the surface texture (orange peel can be in every layer that was sprayed on your car, and take into account your paint has 4 different layers at minimum), but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that doesn't know what they're doing. Damaging a panel or panels can be very fast and easy.

Looks like you need to call in a professional. I have a little bit on the back passenger side of the car as well. Not so much noticable on my AW, but if you're anal like me it'll bother you.

I will get rid of it one day

Yes! Wet sanding but don't do it yourself you need a professional...

Its not going to be cheap, so dont expect it to be anywhere close to $500 bucks...more like 1500-3000

This is why I've given up on "detailing" the M3. Unless you go with wet sanding, you'll never get the orange peel off. Why spend 500-800 bucks on a full 3 step when it still wont have that glass just detailed look.

The Orange peel on BMW paint is a huge bummer. I got to see the new M5 in person at laguna seca in Monterey, after being wowed by the car initially, the second thing i noticed was the terrible orange peel on that beautiful blue paint.

BMW needs to fix this in my opinion.

Clear coat in some areas is already thin, by wet sanding and polishing to a great clean reflection you are also loosing that sacrificial layer (ex. what if in the future you have light scratches and swirls) extra polishing afterwards is just promoting paint issues in the future. I wouldn't recommend it on OEM paint. Showcars for this reason have an extra layer or two of clear as wet sanding is already in the plan for them. My advice, live with it.

People always complain about the orange peel. It is what it is. I was at a car meet this week end, guy had a brand new Ferrari 458 and the entiiiiiire car was orange peel. I'll live with it on my M3

any car will have orange peel even on a lambo or ferrari...

OP, if it really bothers you, Orange Peel could be removed by wetsanding

The orange peel on BMW's is in the base coat. No amount of polishing or buffing will get the peel out unless you go through the clear and start eating into the paint (which u obviously do not want to do).

^^^^ to a certain degree...a lot of it is in the clear as well. So you can sand and remove a good amount of it without blowing through all the clear. It would just be smart to have a REALLY good maintenance program lined up if you are going that route!

Marc and Jacob did a really good article on a jerez black M3 a while back and it looks 100 times better!

I really don't understand why the paint has gotten so bad on BMW's? I have a new 2011 E92 M3 and the peel is horrible! My 2006 E46 has way better paint quality.

Why is it that Porsche can give such beautiful paint to its customers, but our 70K+ cars have the same quality paint as a 25K car??? It really doesn't seem right and I would like BMW to step it up!

As long as people like you continue to purchase BMWs with a ton of orange peel, BMW will continue not to worry about it. I find it comical that BMW owners feel entitled to better paint finishes, yet they continue to purchase the vehicles. It reminds me a Land Rover owners complaining about durability.

FWIW, nearly all "luxury car brands" have similar finishes these days. Once you work your way up to things like Porsche, Bentley, and Rolls, you'll find a difference. These are brands that like to talk about craftsmanship.

Other exotic car brands like Ferrari and Lamborghini have similar finishes to your beloved BMW.

My M3 V8 in Jerez Black was awful with orange peel.. truly apaulling. I had a detailer wet sand it. Took a week or so and he only did major panels but did improve the situation dramatically. To the extent the guy buying the car off me a few years later told me he had never seen an M3 with such a paint finish... of course he had not.

It did cost me a fortune though and not sure I would bother again on a BMW..

My 991 GT3 Paint to Sample in that respect was MILES better and no orange peel to be seen. A world of difference.

Ferrari are known to suffer from this issue and in the UK they get detailed by the importer before delivery to remove some of the peel effect. As UK distributor knows ppl would reject the car.
