I am looking to buy a new M3 should I go for the DCT or the 6MT?

Also as the dealer is not giving anything much off an 09. should I order a 10

Thats a loaded question. Thousands of threads discussing pros and cons. Its your circumstances. Do a search here and you will get plenty of info.

If the dealer is not willing to come "significantly" lower on the 09's, its a no brainer...go 2010. However, it might prove wise to look at other dealerships first. I spoke with two dealerships, so I could have some leverage. You should be getting a really good deal on the 09's. (the price should be under or def. not above invoice...I would think)

not sure how a dealer can sell under invoice? don't they lose money? someone else will buy the car.
But you also have to figure in the finace rates on the 09, thats going to save you quit a bit of money. Thats the discount for 09's .9% vs 6%.

If you are financing the car it make more sense to get the 09. I had a 2010 on order and found out the BMW Financial rate was 6.6. That very quickly changed my mind in getting an 09. Even with the ED discount on the 2010, it would have been a few thousand more to get the newer car and after paying for the trip on top of that, it really made no sense.

Now if you are leasing or buying outright, go for the 2010. I like to have the newest toys, myself.

I was in the exact same boat as you. I test drove both the DCT and the 6MT and while I liked the DCT a lot, I still much prefer the connection you get when using a clutch and rowing through the gears. I'm also really looking forward to getting a short shift kit.

In my opinion, the DCT looked (and sounded) too much like an automatic and I wanted more interaction than simply flicking a lever.

With that being said, the DCT is a work of art and you can't go wrong with it. But in the end you can hear all of the opinions you want but you should still go down and test drive both. It's a pretty big decision to make without having driven both.

I also ended up going with ordering a 2010 because the prices were the same regardless of which I ordered. The only real difference besides manufacturing date is the new option of Highbeams Assistant. The option is not a deal breaker but for another $200, why not?

Thanks everyone. I had test driven both and liked both. The DCT is great, I could never shift that fast and smoothly (maybe a little too smooth), but I feel the DCT may be the next closest thing to driving an automatic except you have to press a paddle periodically. Don't get me wrong I think it is great, but I also read some people had programing issues with the DCT.
I like the connection with the car and driving you get with a stick, so I am going with the 6MT. When I am stuck in traffic and have to shift way too often, or going around a bend and can't shift right when i want to I may regret it, but I think the other times will more than make up for it.

It was about the connection to the car as well. But for me, keeping my hands on the wheel is more important to shifting with a manual. And I love technology. (although if I keep the car past the warranty, it may bite me in the ass)

I have driven a stick my entire life and loved it but now car technology has progressed and I am ready to move on. I wonder if my grandfather ever complained about those new fangled electric starts or my dad misses manual steering?

I ordered my 2010 with DCT. My previous car was a Lexus IS-F and that car got me hooked on paddles. The auto tranny in the F allowed me to commute without much fuss, but still feel involved when I kicked the car into manual mode. If the M3 was going to be just a weekend toy I might have gone with a manual.

I'm in the same boat considering '09 vs '10. I found an '09 that fits my bill, and the dealer wasn't offering as much as I'd like, about 2k above invoice. There aren't many '09s left and I think they aren't willing to budge as much with the 0.9% financing, which is a really good deal. I'm sure I could have talked him down maybe 500-700 more, but in the end I've decided to just wait out until the '10s show up, and possibly wait to see what the LCI brings in March. I also decided that I should probably get a sedan for the added practicality and unfortunately there's no '09 sedans left around me.

It depends, sure 6MT might give you the “truer” experience, but for some of us, who can’t stand constantly up/down shifting in traffic, and like the idea of the new technology that DCT has to offer, than DCT is the route to go. There is no right or wrong choice.

It's interesting you didn't get much off in Oregon. That's why I bought mine from SoCal. '09 fully loaded for $500 over invoice and the 0.9 financing. Still a lot cheaper, even with shipping.

The one I was looking at was actually up in Seattle,WA area. You weren't able to talk down the Portland dealers, or you didn't try because they didn't have any 09s that fit your needs/wants?
