New IPhone 4S Snap-in Adapter?
Dealer said there is a new part number that is showing up in their computers for a new IPhone 4S snap-in media adapter. I've been through two of the old/current ones on the market and neither of them worked.
Anyone else heard the same? Should I wait for the new part number? |

Find out what part number they are referring to. As far as I can tell, 84212218390 is still the current part.

I've had my snap-in adapter for about a year now. It works. It has it's problems like sometimes my MOG will stop working. But it mostly works fine. The movies on my phone never have a problem. Once in a blue moon, my phone will heat up even though I have the adapter w the fan.

There are many different versions of the snap in.
Try to get 390-04 (Hardware 3.0) if you can. This is the newest and best one. It's what I use. There is also a 390-03 (Hardware 2.0) which appears to work most of the time but wouldn't work in my car other than for charging and playing music. No connected drive. Before that was 390-02 and below, these are prone to problems and I don't think have the fan in the middle like the newer models.

I'm using 84212218390-02 Hardware 2.0 and it works fine with my 4S on my 2011 with BMW Apps and it has a fan.
Hardware 1.0 doesn't have a fan and was discontinued. A buddy of my mine just picked up a new 2012 M3 and he got hardware 2.0. His cradle would into recognize his phone in the iDrive. We plugged in my cradle which was identical down to the label and it worked perfectly every time. Needless to say he is getting a another cradle. You may be fine with hardware 2.0 or greater as long as you're lucky enough to get functioning cradle. Best case scenario would be to buy the cradle at the dealer and test it on-site before you leave. There are a lot of rotten apple cradles out there.

There is definitely a complete new part number for the 2012 built media cradles.
Mine is the 390-04 suffix which was the last version before this new model. I don't have the number of the new cradle to hand though. |

I have the 390-02 adapter with a built-in fan. It works well with both iPhone 4 and 4s. 1st gen ipod is compatible as well (just tested yesterday) However due to the cradle design, you will need to purchase the extension cable to connect the device.
If you have a jailbroken iPhone, I would recommend getting the "display out" app. Basically, what the app does is, it allows you to mirror your iPhone display to the nav screen. |

I have a 2013 M3 Convertible, can anyone tell me if the "snap-in" adapter will work if you have a case on your iPhone? I have one with a round mount on the back that snaps into a belt clip.
If not, is there something else out there that one can use like a cable? Thanks |

I've got a MY 2012 E93, with a snap-in adapter, used/uses an iPhone 4s. It is a very snug fit, with zero side-margin, and just a bit top-to-bottom margin to allow the retaining spring on the top of the adapter to accommodate the iPhone. So: No, you cannot use a case around your iPhone...unless it's like 0.01 mm thin. From personal experience, the only time I used the snap-in adapter was when I had a drive longer than an hour. It's just too much hassle otherwise. When I needed a quick connection (for a power charge, or to use BMW Apps [rarely]) then I just kept a black standard iPhone USB-30-pin cable plugged-in, and connected it to the iPhone 4s (with the case around it.) I'm an early tech adopter, and thus had high hopes for the snap-in media adapter but, seriously, it lands about 4 points on a ten-point scale for utility and value. (Now with an iPhone 5, the old iPhone 4s resides permanently in the snap-in adapter as a 50 GB music player and bluetooth for the Cobra iRadar. This solved multiple issues, and even when a new media snap-in adapter is released for the iPhone 5, there's no point in wasting the money.) .

Thanks for the reply.
I wasn't sure if I would need the adapter but now I think I won't bother. Would you know if there are any aps or software out there that makes the navigation display any more useful? It would be nice to have virtual gauges there. Something like a digital speedo, tach, thermometer, clock etc. I am not sure about anyone else, but the analog gauge and steering wheel alignment on this car is the worst I have every owned. The wheel goes right through the sweet spot on both gauges for me rendering them totally useless. And not that I could ever see anyone making use of it, but their "shift lights" would be totally impossible to ever see. |

I'm not aware of any additional "helper" applications. I wish that the USB cable would allow integration with Garmin Navigon for the iPhone. Agreed, the instrumentation is old-style and not as visible as it could be. The entire instrumentation cluster area made me waffle for almost three months on whether to get the M3 because, frankly, a recent-model Kia kicks BMW's a.. in this area. But BMW kicks Kia's a.. in everything else... .

Sorry for bringing up an old thread, but anybody would know if there are any actual differences between these 2 revisions of the 4S snap-in adapter
84 212 298 308 01 84 212 298 308 02 I believe these were the latest part number I can find that supports video playback and might improve the signal reception. |
