I got the warning plus 1, added a quart and my readout went only to full. You put a half quart less in and still got a full reading. Sorrry, but I think you over reacted and put a quart of 1040 in your car. A dipstick would be nice though

Yeah... when I did my oil change, I had the same issue. I added oil in .25quart steps, and until the last .25quart, it kept saying "add a quart".

Where are you? One of the local guys around here could've spotted you a bottle of oil. Guess it's too late now!

Hey Calgarian brother, I'm glad everything turned out okay! You must be enjoying that ride to Vancouver despite the oil issue that you encountered

Roll through Seattle before you head back ...

BTW, lesson learned, bacheh. Always keep a spare quart of BMW approved 10W-60 in the car, especially before long road trips.

Because the M3 burns oil, I always carry a bottle in the trunk. I had the same issue as you on an outing last year but luckily was able to get the oil needed. From that point on, there is always oil in the trunk.

Or always have your oil level topped off . That's my approach, but either method is acceptable. Or do both if you're really paranoid .

The good news is my engine hasn't budged in oil level in 4K miles, so I don't worry about oil level. But check it (properly) every month or so anyway due to little use of the car. Check tire pressures weekly in all my cars. And batteries are charged weekly as well. My cars are always ready for a long trip . Have a good one folks.
