Arrow 2011 mirrors making noises when opening and closing doors

I just got my 2011 E90 M3 last Tuesday and both my mirrors on the doors make a crickity crack noise when opening and closing the doors. It seems to only do this when the car is warm. It does not seem to make the noise in the evening when it is really cool. Does anyone else have or had this issue and what did the dealer find was the problem.

For a $70k+ car it should not be doing this.

Have you taken it in yet? I am going to complain about it on my 1200 mile service.

Does it open and shut without interruption? If so, sounds completely normal. That noise is the motor as well as the moving parts. Post a video and I may revise my opinion.

Everything works just fine. It is the plastic that is making the noise. Sound really cheap for such an expensive car.

Welcome to the club. It has unfortunately been that way since early 08 builds.

I talked to one of my friends who works on BMW every day and he said he has never heard this before and that his 08 does not have this issue. Did you ever complain to BMW regarding this?

I will see what BMW has to say when I take the car in next month.

If someone has had this and the problem has been corrected maybe you can chime in and tell us the resolution.

This is normal albeit cheap. Happens usually when warm because the plastic is softer and therefore more tacky. So it slips and sticks causing a crickety type sound. A possible reason older models are not noticing this may be that BMW changed the type of plastic used in the mirrors to cut cost somewhere over the model years.

I can try to find my old service receipt when I got this fixed a couple years ago. They applied some felt tape to tighten up the housing and add a buffer where it was squeaking. Seems to have worked pretty well.

To the other poster, this was common on early (08) model years as well.

My 2011 doesn't have the problem you described, but I just picked it up about a week ago, so it might be too early for the problem to surface.

I had this same issue and they applied some felt to the mirror at my 1200 mile service and it went away.

I recently heard the creaking again and will have the dealer look at it again.

Good luck!

My solution to this problem: do not turn off your radio until your door is opened

OK. You guys must be experiencing an actual problem. I have never noticed any abnormal or discomforting noises from my mirrors, and I fold em up basically every time i park.

Nothing that has caught my attention or caused me to think something was wrong. All I hear is a mechanical sound of a motor consistent with what i would expect to hear for moving parts. I would never imagine calling up my SA over this...

EDIT: Are you guys talking about noise from the mirrors when they fold up or noise from the door itself??? I just realized that I have been talking about the power folding mirrors this whole time. At any rate, I have not heard a creaking sound in my doors either...

The noise is not a motor noise. It only happens when you open and close the doors when it is warm outside. As one other person and I stated it is embarassing especially, for a car that I have only had for 1 week today.

That is a good question. Mine is an E90 however I am not certain about everyone else.

I just picked up my 2011 M3 on Monday. It did the same thing when i reached for the door. It was the first thing I noticed. I wanted to make sure the mounting points were not loose. I live in Texas and its 10:00 P.M. and its 96 degrees 100 + during the day. The heat is causing the problem. The plastic is very thin and the heat heats it up and it moves so slitly so plastic againts plastic.. Its the painted part I can see how some felt or something else to make it a tighter fit fixing the issue. Other option replacing them with the carbon caps. I will work on mine in Oct its to HOT now. I will post the fix I wont let the dealer touch the car other than normal schedule maint. They F up my M5 last year for somthing minor like this.
