DIY: E92 Coupe Gill Removal Video
Since many people asked for removal instructions and preferably a video on doing this, I decided to make a quick video on how to remove the gills on the coupe. It's easy if you're patient and do it right. The critical part is getting under the gill and cushioning the fulcrum of the lever so you can pry it out.
pasting the link too since the youtube thing in the forum doesn't seem to work: |

Thanks buddy. That's different than the 'grab' method, but with the precautions you suggested, probably the best method; pops out a lot easier than I expected. I have plastic prying tools that I'd use instead of the screwdriver, but same result. Thanks again .

Just got done with E90 side grill removal. What a pain. The video in general works. But the pry point should be on the bottom edge that's closet to the driver/passenger door. That is the best point. After 1 hr of struggling and nicking up the paint on my driver side (arrg), I got the grill to pop.
Then I went to the passenger side and got that side out in TWO minutes. Once you know the correct location and the the distance to wedge in your pry tool, and the amount of force to pry, it's very easy. Be sure to line up a lot of tape (3-4 layers all around the area). Do NOT use electrical tape. It is waaay too sticky and therefore will not stay put on your pry tool. I just used masking tape. For the pry tool, try to use plastic, but I only had metal with me. I used the one that has a curved surface on the bottom to use as my fulcrum (leverage) point. The other key is to insert your pry tool very deep...almost as far as you can insert with horizontal (to the ground) force. Once wedge in, pull the pry tool downwards and the grill will slowly pop out. When you have the first clip in the OEM grill out, I just pulled with horizontal force toward yourself wheel squeezing both tops and bottom of the grill and it will pop out very quickly. So my driver side is kind of nicked. My passenger side is flawless. For those starting this project, I recommend doing the passenger side first...that way if you nick your paint....you won't have to see it every time you go start your car! |

Grille/Gill Removal Comments
I just finished replacing the the grilles and gills on my e92. Two comments...
To remove the grilles, and as everyone has commented, the toughest tabs to access are the ones closest to the headlights. After I loosened the top of the bumper cover and had my hand down in there, I took a long, thin, blade screwdriver and reached into the side gap between the bumper cover and the headlights. I was able to push on the tab with the screwdriver and with a small bit of help from my fingers, the tab released very easily. For the gill removal, and with all due respect to this video, I found the DIY that suggested using packing tape to create a "pull handle" the easiest and most likely way to get them off without creating any paint finish problems. I tried getting the small, electrical tape-covered screwdriver down under the gill to pop it off, but with the lip formed by the fender that the gill sets down into, it was so tight I was simply too frightened to shove it down in there to get any leverage. It just seemed like it (or more accurately I) was going to screw something up. So as someone else suggested, I took a foot-long piece of packing tape and attached one end to the top-side of the gill and the other end to the bottom-side, about 2/3 the way back on the gill. Then I squeezed the loop of tape together to form a "pull handle". I simply applied a bit of pull on the tape, rocked the gill up and down a bit, and pop, off it came. It couldn't have been easier or simpler. Literally had them off with about 5 seconds of rocking and pulling. I tried to find a link to this other DIY, but it must have been on another forum. Anyways, it really worked well, and there's no way you can screw up your paint. |
