Turbo BRZ/FRS/GT86

The more this car comes up the more I have a desire to buy one for the track. I attended a trackday last week at Lime Rock and these were probably the most popular cars there.

The Top Gear review wasn't bad for these. Apparently you can be like Ken Block at every street corner with these.

I think that a Turbo and wider wheels would make it a very fun car to drive. Subaru is hinting of a STi version soon.

STI version will be tits. Rumors are that it'll be NA. To my surprise Subaru is going NA while BMW is going FI. What's next? The world is flat and the Sun orbits Earth?

A GT86 with some proper power (300hp in my book) would be the next best thing to hot cakes.

The new WRX and STi is coming out so they probably dont want to cut sales by putting a turbo in the BRZ. They want you to spend the extra 5+ grand over the BRZ to get a turbo and AWD WRX. I would...(Which is a no brainer for me).

I am not sure what the rumors are but I have heard it will have 300HP. Do you think they will be able to get 300 HP out of that engine?

I would hope that they turbo the BRZ, I am not an expert on engines but do you think they will be able to get more power out of that engine? These are two completely different cars we are talking about. I think the BRZ will be their true 2 door RWD sports car where the WRX STi can be more of a family vehicle/sports vehicle and it's more of a "rally inspired" car with rich history.

Both cars attract two completely different groups of people so the sells won't necessarily favor to the WRX STi except for the fact of it's history and having four doors IMO.

there is zero chance they can get even remotely close to 100 more hp (50% increase) out of that engine without forced induction.

+1 I'd say they'll pull another 20-30+ HP max on an NA motor. Quite possible we'll see a turbo STI but please no awd!

It looks like the updated models will be getting a power bump from a larger (2.5 liter) engine. Power is supposed to be about 230hp. This will be a great upgrade with no downsides like packaging a turbo in the limited space under the hood.

Test drove one a few weeks ago, sorely needs more power. Didn't feel safe trying to pass at highway speeds. Otherwise, great value.

Limited space under the hood???? Are you kidding? You could jam a Vermont Castings 6 burner Babrbeque Grill in that damn thing. You can V8 swap that and still have room left over. There was a good foot of room left over the stock engine.

You are 100% right Drake and its been done almost year ago they put ISF motor into FRS for drifting heres vid.

I too was looking for track car but on limited budget and this may be one. Pick one up used in teens then drop another 10k to 15k and for under 35K you can have fun fast and easy car to maintain and drives like much more expensive car.

I understand that power and speed isn't everything, but a 0-60 in the 7s is terrible and, as you point out, can be very unsafe.
If it does 0-60 in <5.5 seconds, that'd be great.

Yes, but to maintain the 50/50 weight distribution, they need to offset all that front weight with more in back. Remember the FRS is a car made to compete with the MX5 and S2000 so it was weight, response and handling before all else.

Also the way the engine is mounted, an STI-style turbo set up will not fit as the engine is crammed up against the firewall. If you use a turbo, you will need to run long pipes which will reduce throttle response and increase lag as it needs to pressurize it all. A big V8 would not have any lag problem but also make the weight distribution very front heavy.

It's a fine balancing act for the manufacturer to keep the balance while adding some more power.

This observation is my reasoning that the STI version will stay NA. Subaru/Toyota's approach is; minimal weight, good balance and simplicity. Throwing in a turbo would be the easiest way to add big power but I don't think that's the intent of this car.

Based on what people have mentioned, from actually driving this car, an extra 50 HP is a must for the higher model.

I have driven the car as well and agree it feels great but needs more power.

From the news reports showing up, it looks like a small increase in displacement will add more power in the upcoming models. I don't know if this will be a higher end model or simply replace the current model.
