Technology has come quite a long way since the early 90s: the combined lubricity of QDs + foam pads allows for the prevention of swirling, even on wet sanded paint. 0 PPM water also aids in the process by sidestepping the drying step entirely, but I understand that very few people have ready access to a supply of such water. Its cost prohibitive for most, but the results are 100%. You can see a good portion of my filtering system in this picture:

Some incredible equipment in this photo.

If/when I ever get a fixed location, my ultimate water set-up will be exactly yours: Reverse Osmosis to a Softener, to a de-ionizer

Thank you for the compliment d00t. A little update about this project: here's what I'm using to mark previous PosiTector positions, a mounted Blu Ray laser:

What sanding system are you using?

Along with the if/when on water.. I plan on going with the Mirka System. A bit more pricey, but man there stuff is nice.

I'm halfway through the project, it's coming along nicely. The wet sanding is almost done and then I'll be moving onto polishing. Here's a quick pic I took of some of the products I'm using on the project:

Yikes! Looks like one of Sadam's chem warfare factories there. Let's see the the car instead. No, wait. I changed my mind. I don't want to see it. Good luck.

Cheers.

Another week's delay because of this, but I'm shooting for being finished in two weeks:

I'm not going to be doing this to my M5, as I'm going to be getting rid of it in several months for something else.

And a picture of the whole car, after correction. Sparkling Graphite is a difficult colour to capture on camera, being very light sensitive.

Great pictures but they are misleading!

On the first pair of pics they are focused completely differently (as is the second set).

Set one: Look at the difference in focus on the side clading/M3 badges. In the first pic the side cladding is SHARP and in focus because the camera is being focused on the surface of the paint. This means that the texure of the paint is also in focus.

On the second picture, showing the 'sharp' reflections, the surface of the paint is actually out of focus. This is because the camera sees reflections as being further away. Focusing on the reflections is like focusing on somebody through a chainlink fence. The camera will not see the fence.

To be honest the pictures don't show anything more then a change in focus, I am not saying that it was intentional and the work isn't great, but it is hard to tell from those pictures (if you know what to look for).

You see it all of the time when detailers use halogens to show their work. In the before pictures the halogen is slightly blurry and out of focus, but in the after picture the halogen is sharp and reflective. This isn't do to a change in the paint but rather the detailer hiding the condition of the paint by focusing on the reflected image vs. the surface of the paint.

Which is why you need a 50/50 shot to prove any advance. The car is finished, just waiting for my exhaust to be painted.
