Grassroots Motorsports: 135i vs. 335i vs. M3

I always enjoy reading GRM, they're generally a good reality check. This is from the August issue.

I can't scan the article but here's an abstract: M3 betters the others, but surprisingly the 335i is preferred by most reviewers except the only pro driver over the 135i. Some M3 leaning quotes I liked:

M3
James Clay: "Simply an awesome car...the brakes are impressive, they stayed with me...you can feel the weight a bit, but they have hidden it well. It's an absolute blast to drive hard."

Others:
"Never mind the awesome power and increased grip; the steering is so much better--better feel, better communication, better turn-in (than the 335/135)"

"This engine should be in everything...my lawnmower, or powering my house, or simply on display in my living room with a lever attached...so I can blip and rev it until my neighbors lynch me...even if the M3 were no faster than the others I'd still lust after it."

"If the housing market hadn't tanked, I'd be out looking for a second mortgage right now."

"Based on our time with this seductive trio, we came to some conclusions. First, the serious enthusiast with enough bucks simply must have the M3. It's the best track car of the bunch, yet doesn't sacrifice any street manners."

"Let's say you've done your research. You've finally made your choice between the two excellent turbo coupes, and in our view, neither would treat you wrong. Your at the BMW dealership with your hand on the door. Here's our parting advice: Do not drive an M3."

They had great things to say about the 335 and 135, but were generally critical of the handling manners of the 135 and it's less than expected weight differential from the others, though it did post the second quickest track time after the M3 and ahead of the 335. They attributed the 335's performance over the 135 to it's wider track and longer wheelbase.
There was minor mention of turbo lag, brake fade, suspension with the 335 or 135...but these guys are trackheads first.

M3
46.97 seconds average lap time
3585 pounds

335i
48.67 seconds ave. lap time
3544 pounds

135i
48.38 seconds ave. lap time
3392

very short course, autocross times had similar time differences

WELL PUT!!!!!!!

I was about to order a 335, and then I said, "let me just drive the M3 "(as they just received their first demo). And the rest is history guys!

wow - 2 second lead. pretty good. I too am very impressed with the steering feel. not sure why the mags seem down on it. It has that alive and connected buzz running thru it like the e36 had. this was tuned out of the e46. iwas glad to feel that buzz back. the second impression is how flat the e92 corners, again more like a e36. I know its heavier but I beleive the moved the wight lower and towards the center for improved handling.

LUVIN it!!!!

There's a couple threads out there where Swamp weighed his DCT car. It came in ~3620 with a full tank and no driver. Most e92 6MTs are probably in the high 35xx range.

I think the 135i buyers are different, a little more respectful.

1addicts vs e90post. e90post has a lot of immature kids.

Any street racing or kill story thread gets shut down immediately on 1addicts.

agree. they have a fair share of teet suckers, no offense to anyone still breastfeeding. it also reads more like an infomercial at times rather than a driver's forum. watch this post evaporate.

It's funny cause my uncle says he doesn't like the new M3 very much. He's had an E30 M3 with less than 30k miles for many years and doesn't like the direction the M3 went in (meaning heavier and heavier every generation). But he also says he will not test drive it, because he knows if he does he will have to buy it.

I'm like, but you just said you don't like it LOL.

every car is getting heavier.

just read the GRM article - interesting is the torque of the M3 - even tho it is a bit less its extremely flat almost to redline. the 335i / 135i torque falls off very rapidly at high RPMs.

I like thier quote- if you go to plunk $$$ down on a 135 or 335 just be warned not to test drive the m3.

I dont think theu mentioned if the M3 had EDC or not?

I dont really see many street racing stories onM3 post - just a lot a talk and a lot of bench racing!

Safety standards made cars heavier. Personally, no car is worth risking my life in.

That is a small part of it. It does explain part of the upward trend during a short period in history. Generally many cars are getting bigger because that is what folks want. There is not a tremendous difference between the safety features on the E46 M3 and the E92 M3.

they did not mention if the cross wts were with or without drivers? assuming without the driver may tend to balance the car more.

The key new safety feature of the last few years is Bluetooth. Fucking idiots and cellphones have almost killed me 3 times this year. Ever seen a woman (yes, I am sure men do this too) drop her cellphone and disappear below the dash to get it while still driving on the highway? In a 3 ton Suburban?

I guess I am in the minority. I drove both, could afford either, and wound up with an E90 335xi. On public roads I can't even push the 335 to the limit so an M3 is out of the question. In addition, I am not going to track my car so why pay the extra money for a couple of ticks in the quarter mile? For day to day driving, the 335 was a better choice for me: better low end torque, AWD grip in inclement North East weather, better gas mileage and enough handling prowess to keep a spirited driver entertained. I picked up an inexpensive/mild tune (SSTT) and am happy with it.

I have owned both E36 and E46 M3s and both were brilliant. The difference is that they were far and away the best 3 series. IMO, the lines of separation in this iteration are a bit more blurry.

I feel both the M3 and the 335 fulfill their respective visions quite well. For some people with more conservative needs, the premium in price is not worth it.

Of course I have to deal with the Fast and Furious crowd a bit more now but they share a passion for performance much like the M crowd and most of them really know their stuff.
