The countdown to COTA!
Its 12 hours and 30 minutes before I'm at the gate getting set up. I know pizzapie, ShadeD1, txmotor...something, and Art (whatever his screen name is) will all be there.

First, awesome job by The Driver's Edge. First DE on COTA and it went flawless on the first day. Or at least the drivers couldn't tell. Track management is VERY happy so far. Seems like this will go a long way to getting more HPDEs at COTA.
What an amazing facility! Your garage has its own bathroom. Complete with paper ass gaskets, nice soft toilet paper and a pretty cute girl who cleans it...about 3 times during the day. So if your buddy decides to finger paint...it won't be there for long. Table cloths on the tables, $6 salads, plenty of paddock space, nice views...everything! The track? One word...WOW! There are 2 apexes that you turn in for that you can't even see. Kind of like the launch except missing those apexs will put you in a bad place on the track...critical to get them. The back straight is REALLY long. Its neither a HP or handling course...you really need both. Best lap was a 2:43. So I only have to find another 1:04 before I can surpass Vettel's pole lap of 1:39. When yo think about it...He crosses the finish line 3 times...I'm just finishing up my second. Amazing! Pics...videos to follow. It rained in the morning...your car gets extra filthy for some reason.

Just plain awesome. Thanks for posting. Love the the video data logger info too. Nice setup!
I've heard that the elevation changes seem far greater driving the course than on video... Care to comment? |

On T1 and the back straight, my M3 felt underpowered. I've never thought this, even on the 3/4 mile front straight on Texas World Speedway...but the climb is just significant.

It is indeed. An awesome one time experience and definitely worth doing it once. Unless the cost comes down a bit...I think this will be more of a fun, enjoyment, and novelty type event that I do once, maybe twice a year.
The other bummer is there are SOOOO many rules. No outside food or drinks. No outside water. Can't use the power outlet. Guests must be pre-registered. Put down wood if you jack up a vehicle. Pay if you dump any fluid on the track. Guests can't go past certain lines. Etc, etc, etc. Its all for a good reason and I agree with most of them. But still. It made it hard to relax because you don't want to break any rules.

I don't think that COTA cares if you bring a snack...just don't start busting out the gas grill and cook a 100 person buffet. Being the first DE there...I didn't want to test my theory.

Nice driving! I'm incredibly jealous.
This is the perspective I've been waiting to see...so far my only on-track experience at CoTA was a slow lap in an X5 when it was under construction and a track run before the F1 race. Can't WAIT to get out there in the M3. Seems you didn't have any trouble with Turn 19...I was surprised to see so many cars in F1 practice/qualy go off there. I've been so impressed with the facility and the track. And the track-day setup looks awesome. I bet it was a blast! |

Turn 19 is actually tricky. The problem is as I got faster through T16-T18, it puts you further track left. Which means you have less time to get back to the right. Its a very deceiving turn. If you have turn in early and cut the curb you have plenty of track and can carry a ton of speed. If you don't cut the curb, you can't carry nearly as much speed. There is a subtle elevation change where its tough to see that apex. until you get set up for it. During the drivers meeting, the track exec who was there was saying there were lots of late apexes. More than any other track in Texas, this track seems to have more corners where the fastest line is an early, blind apex...those are the ones that make me nervous!

Talk about fun! Thanks James for putting me on the list. I didn't get to drive in it, but was equally excited to be there.
