The rumour on this board is that it's made by Boysen, like the GTS exhaust.

I sincerely doubt (read: hope) that it won't be a $5,000 unit. I was told that BMW is being especially sensitive to price with this exhaust, so I would be surprised (read: disappointed) if it cost that much.

Pricing concerns aside, which exhaust is better? The Akrapovic used on the GT4 or the Boysen used on the GTS? And why?

You'd think the weight savings of the Akra would trump any potential backpressure advantages the non-titanium Boysen unit may have...the Akra GT4 weighs even less than the 27lb. "Evolution" model with lighter cans at the rear & cats/resonators are deleted. If I recall correctly, the Boysen is a lightweight stainless unit.

Good question, I'd like to hear some real answers too.

Thanks OC.

So the Akra Evolution isn't even the same as the one on the GT4? Didnt' know that. Also didn't know the GTS exhaust wasn't titanium. So yeah, the weight savings of the titanium Akrapovic vs. the stainless Boysen would seem to be a win. Have to wonder why doesn't BMW put a titanium exhaust on the 130k GTS? Seems crazy.

Of course it could still be the Eisenmann too.

I have read that the GTS exhaust was a Titanium Boysen. That doesnt mean that a SS version wont be for sale by BMW.

If true then we are back to my original Q.

True. For that matter, Akrapovic might make an SS exhaust too. Eisenmann, I believe is SS as well.

It's not Eisenmann, that much I can guarantee you.

I didn't realize that the retail Akra Evolution is different than the model that is equipped on the GT4 either, though I guess that makes sense.

Back to the BMW Performance exhaust, from what I know about it, it's either an Inconel system with titanium tips or a stainless system with titanium tips. It's a 50-state legal exhaust, which means that it's probably an axle-back unit like the Akra Slip-On, not a cat-back like the Akra Evo. BMW has also publicly said that this exhaust weighs 40% less than the stock M3 exhaust, so it'll probably weigh in the neighborhood of 29-30 lbs compared to the 45-46 lb weight of the stock unit.

Visually, I hope that BMW uses straight cut flat tips like those on the BMW Performance exhaust for the 135, 330, and 335, but that's just me postulating.

Great way to look at it. Some of these exhaust systems are way out of hand.

I'm not sure why the $5,000 price/rumor is gaining traction...

Well, if its an axle-back like you say, yeah, $5k is not even in the realm of possibility IMHO.

I can't understand why people pay these crazy prices for an exhaust.

It's actually visibly different if you compare the Akra advertising photos of the Evolution product with the underbody pictures of the GT4.

The Akra Evolution front section has resonators where the GT4 exhaust is just a pair of straight pipes. Noise management.

I thought the GTS exhaust was made by Arvin Meritor.

The exhaust on the pre-production GTS (pre-LCI taillights, gloss front lip, etc) was by Arvin Meritor. The production exhaust is apparently made by a different company according to others on the forum. It certainly appears visually different than the pre-production exhaust from last year.

^ Indeed.

...and I could have sworn that I read that the Boysen GTS ex. was made of lightweight SS, perhaps I was confused with the pre-production unit that aajami mentioned.

I'm pretty sure the pre-pro GTS exhaust was titanium, as the discoloration typically associated with Ti tips are clearly visible in the early GTS marketing materials. The latest batch of GTS pictures taken by customers don't show any of this discoloration. That doesn't mean that the production exhaust isn't made of titanium, but it also raises the possibility of it being made of SS.

^ Got it, thanks for the clarification aajami.

I read someone's post in this thread that stated it was SS...then again, someone else posted later that it was made by "Light Weight"...
