New M3 Differential...
I just returned from the local dealership.
Took my car in to have the differential fluid changed. There was no question about this and the service rep. said he was well aware of the "noise" problem. They had my car about 30 minutes; test drove it. The service rep. said the technician heard the noise after the change and wanted to wait 30 minutes, then drive the car again. They gave me the car back and told me to put approximately 500 miles on it. Then casually said, "If the noise remains, bring the car in and we'll replace the differential..." I asked about this and was told that BMW is now breaking in the differentials at the factory to address this issue and that they would swap mine out for a new unit. The service rep. went on to say that they have a guy with an M5 on his 3rd differential at approximately 25K miles... Wow. Seems extreme to me. Has anyone here been through this or heard of this? |

I just got my E92 a few weeks ago with 18,500km on it. It's now at 18,800 and I'm noticing the "clunking" mentioned earlier while shifting and letting off of the clutch. I am also hearing the grinding noise but thought it could be related to the clunking.
My question to those that had their diff fluid replaced with the updated fluid and friction modifier is, does BMW do this free of charge? It seems, since they issued a service bulletin that they have identified a problem and have a solution. As opposed to the post about the "clunking" being part of normal operation. It stands to reason that if the grinding noise in the diff were normal, they would just tell us to deal with it. Since it is a documented problem, will they just fix it under warranty, no questions asked? Thanks in advance. |

Would a few of you guys mind doing me a favor? If you have the clunking trans noise, try driving slowly through a parking lot, 20kmh-ish and just hold the clutch in and shift from 1 to 2 to 1 etc a couple of times. It may be normal but it sounds like a muffled clunking rattle. Its weird. If it is just the trans shifting, its surprisingly loud and unrefined. The shifting itself isn't rough though. I have driven lots of manual BMW's and the 1 to 2 shift has more "feeling" to it for sure, but no grinding or excessive force required.

It's been roughly 600 miles since the diff. fluid change.
The noise and noted vibration on tight turns is essentially gone... I've heard it slightly once or twice in the last week, but nothing like it was before. Update: I spoke with the service manager at my dealership. While rare, he informed me that BMW will replace the entire differential if replacement of the fluid does not eliminate the noise. I got a TSB fluid change and it quieted down... Of course ambient temperatures started to rise at the same time. I'm happy that the noise is gone.

Diff noise
Yes, worked for me immediately, though they say to allow 500 miles.

I don't have the diff chatter... yet, but probably will. Problem is most of us didn't get the right fluid (with the added modifier) at the 1,200-mile service. The good news is we're 2 liters away (needs 1.2) from being happy . And it's an easy DIY job for those of us who rather get kicked in the groin than taking our cars to a dealer . Good day gang.

DIY fluid change
True, but then you have to pay for the fluid. Not sure how much it is, but I would guess at least $25/L.

Heck, If dealer refuses to change my oil without driving my car outside parking lot, I'll pay the $125 to change it myself. Last time they managed to scratch and stain my car even with plastic all over the place. They just slid on the freaking seat, and dragged their feet on my door sill. And steering wheel was nasty. Oh yeah, but it was like that before they drove it . Actually, I'm probably just going to do it myself. I already did the brake/clutch fluid change. Good day. |

Is changing the diff oil part of the initial 1200 mile service? My diff never made any noise and I have one of the older M3s and almost 19k miles. I was wondering if maybe the issue arise if they don't change the fluid out during the 1200 service because I'm pretty sure they switched mine out.

Mine has been quiet since the TSB was done.
I'd have to check, but would guess that was April 2011 and about 4k to 5k miles ago. SI B33 01 02.pdf

I just had my diff oil changed to 83 22 2 282 583
I still hear the grinding/moaning noise during slow maneuvering. Do I need to add the FM booster? |

I said something about this to my SA about 6 months ago, they changed the dif oil and the problem was solved...maybe they charged you and never changed it, wouldn't be a first.
