There's a big difference between totaled and damaged. BMW has no other choice but to replace a car totaled while tranporting. I'd bet my left foot that if there was a damaged Audi, they would NOT replace it. Fixing damaged cars at the port is the automobile industry standard.

It was just damaged and fixed at the port. The owner was not happy with the paint job.

Man I would have been so pissed off and rejected the car. This is sad to know after spending all of this money to experience this. I can't read anymore.

Where's my bottle of Goose? I'm going to pray for your car man.

Hate to bring back a topic like this but does anyone know what the dealers told the owners of the vehicles or what the story was. I read the article on Autoblog but I have to ask the question, how does a ship tip in port and cause this much damage I have a friend who was on this ship and this is a video he posted.

From this video you can clearly see that this is not in port and I have seen the pictures of the vehicles on the ship. BMW apparently said they totalled all the vehicles on the ship but now I'm seeing that might not be true. Does anyone know what happened to the vehicles from this?

See my earlier post #19.

"Word is that the M3s bared the brunt of the brutality. Extensively damaged cars will be crushed while those with minor damage will undergo repair at a receiving facility in Elizabeth, NJ, after which they will proceed onto dealers."

Cars get damaged in shipping all the time and the port fixes them. Same here just on a larger scale. The dealer likely won't know and even if they did would not have to disclose to you. These were all very early build M3s (all 2008 model year.)

Mitch, it depends if the dealer is honest. Most likely the dealer will know of the damage as the release of the car from the port will be delayed to repair the damage. I read horror stories in here on guys taking their cars for work at other shops where they were told the car was damaged and repaired.

+1. Cars damaged during overseas shipping can be repaired and sold as new.

Yes, can't recall the number but below a certain percent of the car's value the car is simply repaired and sold as new. Once beyond the threshold, BMW must disclose the extent of the damage. And I'm sure BMW is totally honest when doing these calculations!

This thread title also scared me awaiting my ED M3. But then I recognized the picture I saw in 2008 on this forum. I have nothing against visiting old threads but please use an updated thread title !!

I understand they get damaged as I had to fill out a damage report about small damages but the damage to these cars was much worse and structural to the car not just trim work being scratched
