Let us know how the repair goes, I think I'll have to do this on the front drain plug next oil change..

Hi, with proper care and torque can this be avoided? I will soon do my first oil change on my e90 m3.

Yes, just be mindful that the hex is in there fully before trying to remove the drain bolts. When reinstalling make sure to not overtighten and torque appropriately. Just did my first the other day.

I have over 10 oil changes under my belt on this car, and no issues with stripping. There are a few rules I always follow, some that people disagree with.

1. Always replace the drain plugs at every oil change.
2. Torque the drain plugs with a torque wrench. This is probably the controversial one. I was always taught to never torque a drain plug, and frankly on most cars I never do. However, BMW clearly specifies a torque spec for the drain plugs (25NM), and German cars seem to be super picky with torque specs. Knock on wood, it's worked out well for me so far.

I would suggest just buying a new kit. Give yourself every opportunity to succeed the first time.

Install went good. Really simple and straight forward. Yes I also have done a ton of oil changes on this car never using a torque wrench for the drain plugs. Unfortunately I must’ve been feeling strong this time around lol. May be time to get a quality torque wrench.

If anyone needs to do this the kit comes with extra inserts I’ll probably never use. Just lmk
