2008 M3 e90 transmission oil leak - Help!
Hey guys,
I went into my shop for a burned out tail light and left with car repairs quote for over $5000 (transmission leak, brakes, broken engine shield, oil change). I need help on the transmission leak since its something I am considering doing myself. My repair guy told me that I have two slow leaks on my M3's transmission. He's asking for $2184 to fix the two problems with the transmission.. Problem #1 is that the Transmission Side Pan Gasket (28 60 7 842 856) is leaking. Problem #2 is that the Transmission Pan (28 10 7 842 385) is leaking. I've been quoted 10 hours plus a whole lot of added materials to fix this. See attached pic. Am I getting hosed? Should I just try to figure this out myself using some online DIY guide? (I can replace brakes and rotors, but I am definitely not a mechanic). See quote below... |

Wow it cost $1100 just for labor, I just change exactly same like you but in my country labor not expensive. It cost me $200 for labor. I think better DIY

Typically the side gasket requires the tranny to be dropped. I've read of someone/s doing it without it being dropped.
If you can do brakes, you can do the bottom pan. Just be sure to use new bolts and follow the torque procedure and values. ECS sells a replacement kit iirc |

They are ripping you off. those part prices are marked up atleast 200% And labor shouldn't take half of what they are saying. This isn't rocket science. everything you mentioned is easy DIY if you are even mildly mechanically inclined

You MUST use the right fluid and there is a specific method of replacing the fluid, again, all in the various DIY's on here. I haven't seen a DIY for the side gasket. |

I wonder how many people actually pay that much for that kind of work? I'd be rich by now if they came to mine. I'd find a different shop for that job.
I replace the side pan without removing the transmission. |
