Friday night + YRP - M3
Just got my ADV.1's installed at SpeedStar last night... I was very excited.
I was heading home when I drove past a cop who had pulled someone over on highway 7 and Heritage Road. Two lights later, I saw the same cop car's flashing lights coming from far in my rear view travelling in the same direction as me. Surely enough, he was driving in the on coming traffic lane just to get to me. Pulled me over, told me it was a random safety inspection. Made turn my blinkers, turn steering wheel, put on my wipers, open my hood then told me that the car is unsafe. My car is lowered on aftermarket wheels, xpipe and a rear section. Everything else is stock! $800 dollars in tickets: -improper tires (they are the correct spec and brand new!) -improper muffler -unnecessary noise -removal of emission control equipment (i have an xpipe and rear section, passed emissions legitimately today) This experience made me realize that cops are given too much power in Canada, and the worst part is that when you are in a situation like this there is nothing that can be done nor can your voice be heard. You just have to sit back and watch your property taken away from you, pay a lot of money to get your car back for simply trying to enjoy your passion and hobby for cars. End result:

That's F#%!ed up.
Call this Christian Egsgard 416.492.7900 (All Traffic Tickets) and fight that shit. Some GTA cops sure are assholes I know first hand. Where did you have to go to pick your car up? Since it was listed unsafe did they even let you pick it up?

this is why i try to stay away in that region. mess with you for no reason. about 10 yrs ago i was driving in my acura. cop pulled me over, called back up, suspected i had weed, and stripped my car on the spot. after 45mins of ripping my panels, seats, and all that they found nothing and said "drive safe and have a nice day". i dont even do drugs. just an excuse to harass people. imo, YRP are the biggest dicks.

BRUTAL! I was pulled over 3 weeks ago for the same stuff. I have an AA Signature Exhaust and everything else is stock. He was trying to nail me for exhaust, tint, improper tires etc.
I'm assuming we had the same cop lol. email me at davidk@endrasbmw.com for the best ticket fighter for the YRP. You will not be disappointed. She's awesome and i was referred to her through a client who is a Toronto Police Supervisor. -DK |

Heard about this...I'm not surprised at all. I lived in York region for 12 years and I must say they are the biggest assholes in existence. Your tickets will be dropped. He has no mechanical experience so he has no proof of anything he wrote u up for. When it's all over, take it further and make him regret doing what he did.

One more thing. Next time this happens to anyone, ask for a sergeant/MTO officer to come to the scene. If your a legitimately legitimate, the MTO officer can override the scumbag cop's decision. After all, MTO is trained in automotive, so they will know better than the stupid cop

WTF!!!
I will be extremely pissed off if this happens to me. Improper what??? Based on who's opinion? How exactly did he determine that those are improper tires? Did he get under the car and look at the exhaust to determine you had removed some emissions control equipment? Did he know what should be there in terms of catalytic converters? Did you have your emissions report with you? Even the noise level is subjective. Before they towed my car anywhere I'd be asking for some serious legal paperwork to substantiate those claims. Is it really possible to request an MTO officer come to the scene? |

yes it is possible. The officer has to call him for cases like this. Actually, im surprised MTO didnt show up to this one. If its not 50 over, the cops can't tow your car without an MTO present to confirm the allegations. At least, that is to my knowledge |

Thanks Mahmud...! Good info... I used some of your argument in my complaint letter. It makes sense... How does he know my 'emission control unit' is missing? I legitimately passed the Etest the next morning with the car in the same condition. He would have had to squeeze his face between the road and my car to be able to see whether my cats are there. And again, how would he know what m3 cats look like?
The officer's name is Michael Lacroix.

Thats some serious BS.
Guess he did not have anything better to do with his time. I guess I was wrong in assuming the police are there to "protect and serve".

I'm trying to find some answers online, but it seems that cops are given so much power that if they deem the car 'unsafe', there is nothing you can do about it till after the fact. All I can do is put through a complaint, from which I doubt anything positive will happen, and I have to fight the tickets as well. I paid $130 for the tow, I have to get it e-tested and safetied, pay to get my plates back, new permit and ownership, and finally deal with $800 in tickets.
Great system system huh? Sad thing is our taxes pay the salaries of these police officers. They should serve and protect, not harass car enthusiasts.
