Updating code in car

Can somebody explain to me what the benefits are for upgrading the code/firware/240e software (not sure what the exact term is). I have a 02/08 build and it has never been done. Highly considering it, but wasn't sure what all it did to the car and figured it would be good to know before I spend the money... Any help is appreicated. I've tried searching, but can't land on much to say what all it does. I have seen some claim you get more power from doing this, but I figure that is just speculation.

Thanks!

The 240E update would fall under "programming" and isn't "coding". Coding is feature changing, etc.. and programming is updating software levels and things of that nature. Given that you have never had any update done, I would certainly recommend having the latest engine software update (240E) applied to your car.

In a sense you can think of it as a windows update - patches and other fixes are applied to the code over time. Given you are on original software, you probably have 60E or 80E. The power gain is really an unknown with this, but overall engine operation should be better post-update.

We can update it remotely as part of our performance tuning software package.

Hope this helps

Mike

Mike, thanks for the heads up and explanation. I figured it was much like a PC update. Just fixing bugs with software, but wasn't sure what all was affected?

As for doing any performance turning software package, I'm not ready to make that jump just yet. Only had car for a couple of months so the current power is still enjoyable to me. However, in due time I'm sure I will be looking for a tune.

Thanks!

Just wondering if I had a software update done at the dealership to the 240e. Would it remove my current coding. Will I need to get recoded?

Thanks

Yes, getting the full update to 240e at the dealer would wipe out any coding done. I made sure to have my software updated before my coding was done...

How can you check what version you have? I have an E92 with dvd based iDrive. Since my car is out of warranty, I assume dealers charge you for this?

You would need the dealer to check for you. They will likely charge you a diagnostic fee to just check the version.

When did 240e come out? My car was in for service back in November so I'm wondering it maybe they checked and updated it then. Any idea if this is something they'd have on record where I could just lob a call into them and see if it's logged in my file?

None of the dealers will update for fun. It's true. I believe 240e was distributed in July-ish of last year.

I was able to get the software update for free ( i had a 2012 but it was an earlier build) but if I had to pay I would probably just go through anyone at BPMsport (like mike) with the performance tune + free update.

240 came out late last year. Dealer doesn't update the car unless there's a problem so likely they did not.

I can confirm what THE TECH said, I asked 2 different dealers to do it and they said "unless there is a specific problem, we won't do it". Apparently they could indavertently cause problems and they don't want the liability. Your best bet is to find someone in your area that has an Autologic machine, they can update you to 240e and it probably costs around $100. The Autologic avoids the "possible upgrade problem" by specifically targeting just 240e, the BMW dealer upgrades everything which can cause problems.
