need advice on a good 4x4 suv

winters coming here in toronto and iv never owned a 4x4 car/suv... looking for some advice on a (preferably)smaller 4x4 option.. no trucks plz.. not looking for a new one as i think ill only be driving it in the winter.. lets keep a used price to under 15k?

Subaru Forester is generally regarded a good small 4x4. Maybe not the manliest option, but would work well. Other Subarus are also good in the snow.

There is a reason that you see a ton a Subies anywhere it snows.

I would look at Explorers (maybe a bit big). I will echo the 4Runner, I friend of mine has one that will not die. Jeeps are good too, you could probably get a decent Grand Cherokee on your budget.

I bought a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cyclinder last December for $11,900 with 69k miles on it. These cars loose so much value after you buy them brand new that they are a steal in the used car market.

They definitely aren't as big as you would think...when compared to a Suburban or Tahoe they are tiny.

We also had the worst snow fall in decades here last year with 2 feet of snow on two seperate occassions and my 4x4 jeep went through it like it wasn't even there. Definitely a good winter car at a good price.

I think the 2006+ models have the least amount of issues, but I would do your research first. I think I would also get a v8 next time as the gas milage really isn't all that much different in real life from what I've experienced/heard.

Love my xterra and I only paid 21K new so I am sure you can get in well below 15K.

no good options, really. 3g 4runner was awesome and 4g 4runner was quite good, although watanabe pretty much ruined the 4gs by the endyears, just as he did every other cars in the toyota lineup. and the new 5g 4runner? don't get me started. too fat and overpriced, while quality of the material nosedived. no center diff unless you move up to the limited trim... by which point the price will have reached clost to 40k...

nissan xterra okay if you dont mind the hedious look... and its age - it has received almost no update over the years. pathfinder pretty much the same story

forester is good but i always thought its too feminine and oozes frenchness (whatever that is. think a guy who dont bathe...)

unless you count crossovers as suvs, SUVs are pretty much dead
