Has anyone had a CA smog check lately?

Anyone that's been through one, did they insert that sniffer tool in the tail pipe or did they just hook up through OBD2?

I did it a year ago. They do the sniffer test and run your car on a dyno.

All cars have the sniffer test - that is the definition of a SMOG test.

Lots of misinformation/rumors going around lately that I couldn't believe either. That's why I posted to get feedback from people who've actually gone through it.

What's the dyno for. Make sure you make enough hp? Everyone in California gets free dynos?

They want to test the car under load.

There was legislation a few years back that would eliminate the sniffer for obd2 cars, but not sure when it goes into effect.

It has already gone into effect. The smog guy I know he still uses the dyno for cars 2001 and older. Starting with 2002 models it will just be a computer plugged into your OBD port and have all the data downloaded to the computer.

So there IS truth to this rumor I see.

Theoretically, if I can find a tune that blocks the O2 readiness code and some high flow cats to pass visual, then I'll pass the smog test?

Anything wrong with this logic?

I know they don't run the dyno for AWD cars as most places do not have AWD dynos.

Besides that, I had my smog done a few months ago for the M3 and it was on the dyno with the sniffer.

This should answer that.

http://www.smogtips.com/new-smog-law-AB-2289.cfm

The change should be in full effect by year end. If they try to dyno or sniff-test you, go somewhere else.

I know for a fact that your vehicle has to be ran on the dyno during testing and they will insert the "sniffer" into your exhaust.
Also, they will connect to your OBD port and check for fault codes.
For AWD vehicles, they still use the sniffer and check OBD just no run on dyno.
They are increasing the minimum requirements for CA.
It sucks but it is what it is.
$300-$400 is the going rate and you don't have to worry about any smog

I had my car smogged recently and there was an E46 M3 on the dyno. The smog shop used the sniffer as well as used an OBD2 scanner to check for any codes. I do know the smog requirements will gradually get stricter here in CA, I just haven't followed up with any of it to see what changes are planned.

I did my wife's 2010 ML350 about 9 months ago and it was just an obdII test. I am taking my 2012 M3 this weekend and I'll report back here in SD.

Nice, I'm interested to hear about your experience. Is your '12 modded at all?

You have to smog you 2012 M3 already? There is usually a 4 or 6yr grace period for new cars before they need to be smogged.

That is unless it was an out of state car and you just recently moved to California and trying to register it in this state

Yes, if you aren't putting down at least 105 HP with your NOS and Injen CAI Civic LX, your car gets crushed

No it's stock but I will ask the guy there to see if he'd pass me for cash with cats removed. He just so happened to be from my hometown in chicago so we'll see.

That's a big risk he has to take for that. The CARB can revoke his SMOG license if they find out. That's his career on the line for your smog if he passes your car.

He better be a very good buddy and some good payout for him to risk that for you!

I think it's also up to a $50K fine per offense if caught. Better be a really good friend to do that type of favor
