Enjoy Footie - SSII is rocking. And rather convenient in your and mine climate zone - it does not look dirty too quickly.

Back to first impressions of the car and the gearbox.
The Car With the 18" alloys on the light paint finish the thing looks very aggressive, I didn't go for Shadowline and I'm glad for that as I think it will be a bugger to keep shinny. The Fox Red looks much better than I thought is would with the SSII, it's not red enough to clash with the blue tint in the silver. The steering, is much better than the S5. I prefer the normal setup over sport but this might be down to being use to the overly light Audi system. Brakes feel strong and progressive but do squeak, this might be normal and I didn't order the racing pads if you want to know. Compared to the S5 the dash/interior is spartan though it doesn't feel any less luxurious or less well made. Small touches I like are the seat belt which come to meet you, the light on the door trim, the feel of the steering wheel and the way the auto wiper system works, much better than any other I have had. i-Drive isn't the best when compared to Audi's MMI but over time I will get use to it's quirkiness. I briefly touched on the ride quality before but I need to say again how good EDC + 18" rubber is, it's WWAAYYYYY better than I could have hoped for, better than the brother's X6, my S5, the previous M3 and all the other 3 series models when equipped with sports suspension. In fact I would reckon it's as good as a non-sports suspension 3 series. Seats are comfy but sit to high and there isn't the lateral support expected of this kind of car and it's cornering ability, both Mercedes and Audi have it licked on this. Sound system isn't as good as the Audi's B&O system, the quality is all there but the sound stage isn't as well placed. Of the two surround modes I prefer concert best. Now the Gearbox Blown away is the best description of how I feel at the moment. It's better than the auto in the X6 which is probably as good as automatics get, the thing is always in the right gear and when in D3 the kick down suits almost every occasion. The only thing I would say at the moment is D2 is better for keeping the revs below that 5500rpm mark. The thing is much better than the old DSG when it comes to reversing, the crawl mode is a dream. One thing I would say is that on little throttle you will feel the shifts ever so slightly, something I never noticed in the DSG, but with remotely any decent amount of throttle the shifts are ultra smooth and go by without being noticed. The same applies for the S2 and S3 modes, buttery smooth and a total dream to use. I haven't really tried the higher manual modes because there isn't really any point, what with only 5500rpm at my disposal. I love the way that the gearbox gets to 7th gear hellish quick, it's perfect for normal driving. Around town there is the odd clunk, but not near as bad as it would be working a manual in similar conditions, though it's the one area where the auto still rules supreme. In normal driving I just don't like either sport or sportplus throttle mapping, it's too hard to drive smoothly in traffic, it's great for the open road but not when you are starting and stopping all the time. This weekend I intend to take a long drive by myself to get properly acquainted, if you know what I mean. Can't wait for the first service to be done, man this break in period is a bummer. |
