no! it is not gear type nore a clutch type! it is a speed-sensing (!) gkn visco-lok unit which needs different rotational speeds on the driven wheels to actually activate the shear pump to apply pressure to the clutch pack and finally lock. so it is a slow performer and not comparable to a torque-sensitive clutch type lsd like the osg or the former bmw stock lsd units used until the e36/e39 m-cars!

all current bmw racecars (incl. m3 gt4) still only use clutch type lsd units... these units are the way to go if you want the maximum performance (and fun).

Good to know I had been informed that it was closer to a clutch type..I suppose thats why the M3 LSD doesnt chatter, pop and clank like a typical salisury LSD..clutch types are great but oooh so noisy..

the viscolok has clutches and so chattering noises can occur just like as conventional clutch type lsd units. but if they do, you have too much preload and/or the wrong oil inside.
my various clutch type lsd units don't chatter!

a little scratching in tight, slow corners is normal for viscolok and clutch type and is a sign for a vital unit!
torsen units do not make any noise...
