Anyone know why Eisenmann black costs $500 more

It seems to me that the black painted Eisenmann muffler is a little pricey compared to the standard units. Is there something special about this paint? Is it a ceramic coating or something? Seems like I could do the same thing with a couple of $7 cans of hi-temp paint. I could see like $100 more, but $500 more ???

I know the tips were not ceramic coated when they first came out. I had one and it flaked after 2 track days. I think they have changed the process and it's ceramic now. I would never buy one that wasn't black, but that's just me.

No idea why it's so much more, I can see $200.

It's $500 more because many people will pay it rather then doing it themselves -

A can of black spray paint will give you a similar look but won't be nearly as durable.
Just make sure to wait until after you install it to spray paint it.

I have been shocked at how good the DEI silicon high temp coating is.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...SIN=B000MY1RB0

It looks better than a few powdercoat jobs I've seen and holds up better than powdercoating exhaust bits. (more impact resistant)

"Eisenmann's M3 Black Series exhaust system features 4x83mm high gloss black LeMans tips, sport or race sound options, a high temp coated canister...."

High gloss black LeMans tips, and the high coated canister make it more expensive. Not sure about the $500 MSRP price tag. But who pays that anyways.

The black series finishing process remains a fairly costly one. During the finishing process the entire canister is media blasted for proper adhesion of the black finish. The tips are carefully masked while the canister finish is applied, and the canister is then baked at 450 degrees to cure, allowed to cool, and then masked again so that a gloss black finish can be applied to the tips.

The coating material lays on like a powder and the matte black finish of the canister has been specifically selected for it's temperature tolerance.

Of course, you could certainly get a similar look yourself, but to copy this finish you'd need to invest in a large oven, the necessary guns to apply the high temp powder, the powder itself, media blasting equipment and so on. A can of VHT high temp black paint will produce a nice high temp finish too and there's nothing wrong with taking the DIY approach. There are those who choose to use our finishing process, and it is typically because they can appreciate the value of the carefully applied finish, especially once the exhaust system arrives and they are able to see the work in person.
