Hyundai RWD Coupe Revealed

According to the info given, the Coupe would have two engine options, a 2.0L turbo with 215HP and 217 ft-lbs of torque, or a 3.8LV6 with 300HP and 280 ft-lbs. Prices were given as $19,900 for the 4 or $25,900 for the V6. While we have good reason to believe there will be a genuine V8 in the engine bay when we see the car in LA next week, this event was held back in June and changes could have been made since that time.

Remember, kids, this one is RWD. Looks pretty good, if you ask me. The price and likely performance are remniscent of the old Nissan 240SX coupes. Nothing wrong with that. We need more affordable RWD coupes on the market.

This has the potential to be a modern Mitsubishi Starion/Conquest TSi. And that's a market niche that has been vacant for far too long. Hyundai is going to clean up and sell a crapload of these cars. I don't understand why its taken so song for the Pacific rim to come up with a car like this.

I'm impressed with Hyundai for that...

But why did they have to make it look like a Pontiac G6(side view)?...

I'm not exactly a fan of Hyundai, but it does make the Mustang seem rather plain looking.

The 3.8L V6 is pretty good also - pressure cast aluminum block, 6-bolt main caps (4 vertical, 2 horizontal), & forged crank. Hot rodders dream.

Yeah and the Mustang looks to be the segment they want to pick on - seems that Mustang sales are good enough that everyone wants a piece of that action.

Whether or not it will be available with the right features will determine how seriously I look at one of these. If I can't get one with Bluetooth/nav/Xenons/LSD/6 speed/Brembos then it's not going to seem like a very legit alternative to the G37 and 350Z, which is where I think it should be competing.

I like it. Especially for the price.

Too bad Toyota won't sell an IS350 coupe.

Instead, Hyundai will do it for them, with a possible V8 under the hood. And for less money.

Good for Hyundai.

I read today that there will be no V8. There reserving it for the Genesis sedan.

That's one of my main issues with Hyundai. They are very derivative in their stying, although on the plus side they do tend to copy from the best. I guess that it would really be bad if they copying Yugos.

I'm also a little underwhelmed with their engine technology. Hyundai's answer for more power seems to normally rely on increases in displacement as opposed to say BMW's or Honda's approach of using more advanced technologies such as turbos, direct injection, and variable valve timing.

In the end though Hyundai does make the market more competitive and who knows, but I might buy one yet.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe for 2009

What do you guys think of this upcoming car?

I will have a choice of 3 engines: Turbo 4, V6, and V8.

Supposedly Hyunday wants to have the most affordable 300 horsepower RWD 4 seat car in America.

Don't know too much about it. I owned a Santa Fe years ago, actually was a decent car, especially for the price. Reliable.

OK - rather than bump the old Hyundai Coupe thread, I merged it into the new one.

It's looking good on paper. 306 hp out of the V6 and something like 220 hp out of the 2.0 turbo.

The turbo-4 would be the tuner's dream. I'll bet 400 rwhp wouldn't be particularly hard or expensive with one of those...enough to outrun a Dinan flashed 135i. (Not that I don't still want the BMW of course).

One of the interesting things I've noticed in most of the press releases about the Genesis 4-door and 2-door cars is HP numbers for both premium and regular gas. So Hyundai clearly has figured out how to optimize to different octane ratings. I wish that would become an industry standard.

If I'm on a long road trip, I could care less about high performance. I'd rather just fill up with regular octane when I'm stuck crossing Nebraska in a straight line with the cruise control set to 79.5 mph.
