VW drivers with attitude

I know this is similar to a thread topic started quite a few months ago - but since owning my M3 beginning in July, I've noticed that the one make of car that seems to initiate aggressive acceleration around me are various VW's... I find this strange, given that mustangs, camaros, STi's, Evos, and other similar cars' owners (at least in my experience) do not seem to do this?

Anyone else notice such a trend with VW or other makes' owners? (Any by the way - no offense to the many great VW owners' out there and I do think VW makes a great car - I absolutely destroyed them each time).

yeah, GTI drivers especially love to race it seems...

I actually had a really fun encounter with one in my old e90 330i around the quebec/NY state border on some empty strech of road.... was pretty close for the most part. I took him as the speeds went 180kmph+ (115mph), but he was a good sport and gave the thumbs up after we cooled off....

My neighbor owns a new modded GTI with "V8 EATER" or something along those lines as his license plate. Of course he has that loud obnoxious exhaust so I know when he leaves for work in the mornings.

I read this somewhere - "VW Jetta: No matter how fast you drive and weave through traffic, it won't transform into a 3 series."

I guess I just don't understand the mindset of some of these drivers - it would be like me in my stock E93 trying to compete against a Z06 or Viper who pulled up next to me - I love my car, and yes it's a high performer, but let's be realistic here!!

I guess I'm curious as to what percentage of such drivers "with attitude" and who can't back it up fall into each of the following categories:

1) know nothing about cars (in other words, think an old beat up 7-8 year old Jetta with cheesy yellow headlights, a half-fallen-off front bumper and a coffee can exhaust actually has a chance vs. new but fully broken-in M3);

2) actually do know that certain cars are faster than most (M, AMG, corvette, etc.) but are so emotionally wrapped up in their own cars (i.e., same crappy old Jetta as above) that they nevetheless think they can compete if they step on the gas hard enough; or

3) know the respective cars are mismatched, but just want to see what the faster car can do (newer VW with 2.0T engine - very nice and capable car, but still a mismatch, so why bother)?

I guess this is just one of those issues of human psychology (as expressed through people's cars) that I've always found interesting...

Hmm I haven't had a VW trying to race me (or annoy me into a race). Civic Si and E9x 3xx's on the other hand....
Even had a Jeep Grand Cherokee (NOT the SRT one) and a Honda Pilot trying to instigate a stoplight race. What the heck?

Yes - I also noticed a new Jeep Grand Cherokee do the same thing to me, and once I noticed it also was not the SRT, I also thought "what the heck.." was it ignorance, ego, jealousy, or all of the above? Guess it's just going to vary from driver to driver, but still makes me think

I haven't had any VW's try but I did have a Camaro try just recently. Notice the word "try".

but I think more the individual, I've met guys with all type of cars that are cool and tools

honestly guys, a lot of very "pedestrian" cars will try to egg you on in your Ms simply because they want to see/hear your car take off from the stoplight, not because they actually want to race you... so if its safe, and within reason, put on a little "show" for them and brighten up their day LOL

Interesting you should bring this up.
In the year and half of owning my car, I've had 2 'challenges'. One was an E46 M3, the other was a modded VW Jetta (it had some tuner badge on the trunk).

I thnk they like to mod thier V-dubs and they want to see if it helped. its pretty easy to get 300 hp out of the 2.0T motor.

I agree with the last couple of posters that a lot of those people just want to see what the car can do. I guess when you have people who then catch up to you, tailgate you and continue to try to pass you (the crappy old Jetta with cheesy yellow headlights), then you know it's either option 1 or 2 (I think 2 in that case)...

It's funny that you are complaining about other drives attitude, when M3 owners attitude is one of the worst ever. Check out some of the other threads.

76 posts...Yep, you are definitely new here.

Great point - after only 76 posts - even I have noticed that - it's easy to see why a lot of people don't like Bimmer drivers, particularly those with M3's...

I guess I consider myself and (hopefully) most others on this forum to be little more reasonable than those I'm referencing - like I said above, I'm not going to get all jacked up if a faster car passes by me - Viper, 911 turbo, etc... it's amazing how many people take it personally when you pass them - if I'm not in a hurry, I could care less if a minivan passes me...

no doubt - they will only race from a roll. in my stock 200 hp FWD GTI I cant even floor it in first or part of second from a start.

however it does pretty well on a track.

VW GTI's

When you have a driver with a tuned VW GTI and knows how to drive it. Ive seen a few VW's smoke a few M3's around the Nurburgring and the M3's that were getting passed were E-90,92 M3's. Most of the drivers of the M3's were Americans just because you own an M doesn't mean you know how to utilize a superior car. Street racing or 1/4 mile spurts are for big headed egos. If any one is a true M driver they would come out to germany and prove if they were worthy to take a few laps around the Nordshliefe (Green Hell) but if you get smoked by an inferior car you are not worthy of owning the M brand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!
