Service Update: 2008 E92 M3 6MT / Steering Issue

EDIT: See post 4, 13, 14 and 15 for updates

Finally dropped my car off for service today. It is a December 2007 build 6MT. I have 23,7XX miles. As I have mentioned in some threads on here, I am having a number of issues looked at during this visit just for precautionary and consolidation purposes:

Routine items:

- oil service
- wiper fluid top off
- possible brake service (waiting to hear if pads are low enough - likley just fluid)
- spark plugs
- diff fluid

Request for SA to investigate:

- notchy gear box
- crunching/knocking sound in steering full turns (like when parallel parking)
- Idle vale (some dipping below 500 RPMs and roughness occasionally)

Initial details on investigative concerns:

Transmission - Shop foreman and I went for a spin, and he thinks my gearbox is solid. I believe that it is as well, and think most of my paranoia just stems from all the threads I've read on here! He said they will take a closer look just in case. Clutch is great too he said. Asked if they will take out 2008 clutch spring for me and he said they can't. Apparently, doing so could void the warranty on the clutch and potentially transmission. Will report back on any relevant findings.

Steering issue - Some of you may recall I reported about a soft knocking crunching sound when turning the wheels full turn in either direction. I had the Foreman look at this, and he did say he heard and felt something that should be investigated. I'm curious to see what comes back on this. Will report back on any relevant findings.

Idle valve - Nothing to add as of now.

Will edit OP with updates.

All in all, he said the car feels great. I did not bother bringing up the issue of interior rattles. I hope to have it back soon and will be sure to keep the community apprised of what comes up.

Loaner: I have a 328i Xdrive. I realize dealerships are under no obligation to provide a loaner, but BMW Seattle does and they offer newer model BMWs. There were several other cars that I would have had my pick from (335s and F10 5 series) that could have potentially been available. It would be nice if I got to drive a 335 or 535 to see what the N54/N55 is all about. call me a snob, but coming from an E92 M3 to a E90 328 Xdrive makes the latter feel like a minivan. Oh well, sure beats having to get a ford fusion from enterprise out of pocket.

Look forward to reading the results (mine has production date of 3/08).

FWIW, I feel as if I've been able to drive most of the BMW product line through various appointments (brakes, oil changes, service engine soon messages, etc). The 5 series GT was fast in a straight line but cornering was just... awful. Biggest complaints I usually have with non-M loaners is how thin the steering wheels are and how flat the seats are. Every time I get my car back I smile when I climb in.

No service update yet but I had to go back because the 328 bugged out on me! There was a loud buzzing noise from the rear panel that would not shut off. So long story short, I now have an E90 335i. This thing has so much torque!

Hahaha. Sorry, but the 335 has nothing on an M3. Having said that it is a great little car and gives me hope for the future of BMW turbos.

UPDATE:

oil service performed
diff fluid changed
spark plugs changed
brake fluid service
heating and A/C microfilter replaced

Transmission confirmed: normal and in good condition

Idle: Confirmed no issue at this time

Steering: This is a possible issue. The tech confirmed the sound and inspected the steering rack. They suspect that something is binding the rack at low speed. BMW will be getting involved to see what repairs are needed. Mostly likley new rack headed my way.

I did not want to leave my car there until wednesday, so i took it back. All in all, I am very happy with the condition of my 2008. It is one of the earliest built and I was worried that would mean lots of problems. I have put over 12,000 miles on in the last 7 months and usually drive with plenty of throttle. It is holding up amazingly well. The car is awesome. I'm glad to know my MT is normal and I can enjoy the car like it's meant to be. Just gotta get this steering issue out of the way and some new PSS 255/35/19 for the front and I'm GTG.

I love BMW Seattle. they are great. Who was your service Advisor there? I usually deal with Tom. He is a great guy. Good luck and let us know the final result. I too have a 2008 M3 6 Spd. Mine has only 5,000 miles on it. I need to drive it a bit more, I know...
so far, not a single problem. I did get an early/late oil change at Seattle BMW last week and I got a 328 too. I didn't really care much for it, but it was good enough for a loaner car.

What service are you getting? Is usually every 15k.

I think this is the "24,000" mile service. It's the first major service I've had on it since I got the car. Last one was performed around 12,000 miles just before I bought it.

Taking her back in for the steering issue tomorrow. I hope it's a quick fix.

GOD I miss my car. I am now pushing a bright red E90 328i with NO tints and I hate it. Looks like a teenage girl's car. #overexposed

Should have it back by Friday or Saturday. Was told they will first try to replace the lower joint, and it that doesn't solve the problem, they will replace the entire steering rack! I might have the first E9X M3 with a steering problem. Dealership said haven't had the problem before. I wonder if it relates to Servotronic at all?

WOW - just got a call from my SA - the type you hope not to get. The lower joint part is back-ordered from germany and won't be here for 8 days! That's especially frustrating since this is phase I of the repair. If it doens't fix the probelm, I will be looking at a similar type wait for a steering column most likely.

Any special concerns about the dealership having my car for several weeks???

If the dealer's going to have our car an extended period of time, see if they're willing to put you in something a little more comfortable?

I would say I've heard that half a dozen times. Generally, my dealer has asked me if I want my car back in the interim. Because they don't need my car while they wait for a replacement subwoofer, air intake sensor, etc. Did they break something during the joint take-off that prevents them from putting it back together so you can drive it as-is? Or are they worried about additional damage to the car if you continue to drive it..?

Yes, they are waiting to get some other cars in and they will accommodate my request. Hopefully a F10 535 or at least an E90 335.

I asked if I could take it back, and she said it's disassembled. I didn't bother asking if they could reassemble it - but maybe I should. 8 days is a while. I took it back the first time though, and noticed that the sound was getting worse. I worry about driving it around like that. My fear is the steering could lock up on me while I'm driving around a corner or something - like the guy with the canyon road story.
