the M3 and it's raspy sounding exhaust

So does anybody know what technically gives our cars the raspy sound in the exhaust? It seems to be a common characteristic of all generations of ///M3's and it seems to be quite a bit more than any other car. (Well at least way more than any other car I have every owned).

i don't think the new m3 has any rasp at all in stock form unless you start changing the exhaust to aftermarket part. maybe you are talking about e46 m3.

um...no lol. If you delete the resonators it gets kinda raspy

Is that what you're taking about J08M3?

I'm talking about e9x generation. Yes, you can't really hear it with OEM exhaust, but soon as you put anything aftermarket you hear it a lot. Even if the aftermarket has resonators it's still fairly raspy.

I agree. My car sounds raspy now that I have my Meisterschaft GT on it. I kind of like it actually.

My car is not RASPY at all, Im running stock pipes with Eisenmann Race.

I would hate to have raspy, I think the worst part of the E46 M3 was the horrible stock raspy exhaust!

yea that's for sure....

But technically what's going on inside that engine that makes that raspy sound? It seems to be more raspy than many other high compression vehicles on the road, so it can't just be the compression ratio.

I grew to like the rasp from the E46 M3. But, having said that, I like the sound of the V8 exhaust much better. I'm still stock (hoping that will change soon) so I hear no rasp at all. I have no clue what causes it though. Also, FWIW, the Z4M had the same engine as the E46 M3 yet hardly any rasp compared to the M3.

Cheers.

The rasp stems from the design of the exhaust ports and valves. Some exhausts will almost nulify the rasp, but it's still there whatever exhaust you fit

Depends on the exhaust setup.

My riss racing xpipe w/ stock muffler = raspy, with certain times sounding like a trumpet

My full gintani catless was super throaty but it had a bit of rasp midway but sounded good

my dinan/gintani xpipe setup sounds throaty but in the low rpms reminds me of a C63 tractor like sound, no rasp
