I'm so used all the torque in the E55 that I'm not sure if the M3 will still be fun in city driving. On the other hand, I know the handling will be night and day difference. Has anyone else gone from a car with a tremendous amount of torque down low to a E9x M3? I love the C63 but I just feel like I want more of a race car at this point in time and the M3 fits that bill much better even though it may not be as fast.
even my '03 E500 has more torque than the M3, but it's not stopping me from picking up one. 2 totally different cars, hard to compare. If you can, keep the 55. That way you won't miss either one. I'm keeping my 500

Picked up a 08 M3 Vert... must say the overall feel of the car, the handling, transmission, and power is well balanced, and TOO much fun. Vert is quite heavy, coupe is the way to go. Had a 06 M6 prior to the E55... and can say the overall feel of the m3 is far better than the m6. Of course M6 was fast, but the smg tranny was too jerkey. E55 is raw power, but thats about it... m3 feels SUPER slow after driving my e55.... 3x more torque I guess thats expected lol...
and it's tbone from mbworld I wonder how many other MBWorlder's are lurking over here haha

What is a "city monster"?
Well, it will keep going if you find a road in the US where you can accelerate further.... That is the question OP is asking for.

City monster, E55 would be a great candidate for sure

What up to all the MBWorld folks on this board! It's depressing how dead the AMG forums are these days. BMW has always had such a great enthusiast community.

And to the guys who asked why I need all the torque, it's not necessarily the I need it, it's just that I'm used to it now so there is going to be a noticeable difference in feeling at lower RPMs.

No offense but this is a very ignorant statement as the m3's dct is geared in a way where your hardly ever below 2500rpm and the m3's moves very quickly from 2500 rpm and up.

With the RPMS going upto 8500 in each gear, you can rip very fast where ever you want, the longer range to keep pulling through each gear basically means you end up going very fast before you know it. City driving you rarely get over 2nd gear and use 3rd even less.

Also, read the sticky thread on how to calculate torque for the M3

Had a "discussion" with some numpty in a bar about performance cars. I was tooting the M3s horn and he about faster off the line cars. I said it was more than just laying a patch and a quick 0-60 time.

I was losing a battle talking to this cement head so I finally asked him what he thought was the best motorsports series on earth was. Immediately he replied "formula 1."

I nodded and said "had you said NHRA I might have seen your point of view.... Thanks for winning the argument for me."

Big Daddy Don Garlits, while ballz, couldn't get him out of that one.

ignorant? Not when I own both a DCT M3 and a Z06. I think I know what I'm talking about.

I'm not talking about your z06. I'm simply stating that your post is some what misleading. The op needs to understand that the m3 has no issues passing cars. Torque is not an issue in the m3 as it gets up to speed in no time from almost any rpm and any speed. It's more of an issue in the 6spd manual m3 not with dct.

And I mentioned my Z06 as an example of why I feel the M3 feels gutless until you wind it out. I realize that the gearing of the DCT make the M3 feel quicker, but you cant discount the lack of torque just doing some regular, everyday driving. Compared to the torque in my Z06 and the OP E55, the M3 is gutless. period.

If the OP is considering to keep the car NA, he can always go to Dinan and put I believe the 3.62 diff that they offer. It makes a huge difference with the down low torque. I come from an 6sp M3 and I have the 4.10 diff and it is a tremendous improvement for day to day city driving. With DCT diff from Dinan it provides even better improvement from the lower RPMs and will always keep the car in the rev range where the power will be.

Before I put the stroker in my M3 this was the best improvement I have ever done to the car for day to day drivability.

Of course you lose some of the top speed, but rarely do I get the chance to WOT the vehicle to those speeds daily.

Just a suggestion OP.

I think we should take up a collection for driving lessons. Most of these people would die driving a small displacement engine around Sao Paulo. Nothing like seeing people roll down a hill backwards because they can't get started after having to stop.

"garbage" - LOL. People are delusional. I LOVE driving my car around town...shifting is fun.

A city monster can go from 0 to hitting-a-pedestrian in less than 4 seconds.

It's interesting how the OP asks what appears to be a simple question (that know one but himself can answer since it's VERY subjective), and the thread turns into a raging battle of how slow one of the top 1% of all production cars ever made is.

Get a life people!!

To the OP... I think if you adjust your driving style for the differant drivetrain of the M3 you'll be fine. You just need to be a little pickier about what gear you're in.
