I was the who started the mod my car or my wrist thread a while back and I ended up doing both. I bought a Breitling SA and then bought an exhaust and a whole bunch of other stuff for the car. After a while I modded my wrist again and bought an Omega PO XL. Now I'm back to modding the car and spent some money on my Corvette. It's back and forth between modding cars and my wrist for me, but I enjoy it. But if I had to chose Id say mod your wrist, it lasts longer. Just don't buy that particular Panny.

Did you already find that exact Panerai? If you can find a specific Panerai that is hard to come by, that would be the way to go. In a few years, you can always get your money back and probably a little extra due to the very limited quantities they produce.

I have a Luminor Marina PVD similar Panerai to the watch on this thread and BBK. If I had to give up either of them it would be the watch and I could buy several BBKs with it. People keep saying that you'll only enjoy the BBK if you track and for the most part that is true. But I have experienced brake fade during canyon drives with the OEMs. Not to mention BBK tones down the amplification on the brakes a bit which is preferable for me.
Also a word of warning if you do get the PVD Panerai. Be careful not to scratch it, there's no way to fix it if you do except polishing it and turning it into a stainless model.

John, how much do you reckon this watch is worth (without the blue marks)?

if you track, BBK. If you don't, ehh. Personally I'm not a fan of spending that kinda coin on a watch unless you have money burning a hole in your pocket. But if you have the coin the Panerai is my choice.

You guys are funny, and somewhat predictable.
First off I do not "track" the car. Will I go to a track event or 2 in a year sure, but I do not regulary track the car. Secondly I would consider myself somewhat of a watch snob. This could be good or bad, good in that I do understand and know Panerai very well, bad in that I already own a few other watches, Rolex, Audemars Piguet, and Brietling (had a Panerai 111 but sold it), so do I really need another? As far as this watch or Panerai being boring, to each there own. i am looking for an all black PVD/DLC watch and this one really speaks to me. It's very stealth, Panerai has a great histoyr, loyal following among Panerisiti, and I would like to own a Panerai again. I likely will go with the watch, becuase the watch like soemone else said, will pretty much last for ever. I will own this watch for a very long time, and in all likelihood it will increase in value and mostly likely should I decide to sell it in the future (I don't intend to), I could most likely make most if not all of my money back. That being said the BBK is such a great mod for our cars, regardless if you tarck the car or not. I do intend to get the watch over the BBK, but thought I'd take an informal poll and see where most M3postsers stand.

If you track the car, get the BBK - otherwise it's 100% useless. Even if you track it's useless...depending on your skill level.
I don't think you can go wrong with a Panerai - and this is something you can enjoy at all times, not only when you're in your car. So get the watch. |

Don't get me wrong, I think fine time pieces are very nice, but you have to have money flowing out of your ass to afford such luxuries IMO. I'd pay 7k for something like this Too bad it costs $445,000.

Get the PAM. You will enjoy it more then a BBK if you don't track the car often. Especially if you don't have more then 1 or 2 watches at the moment.

Watches are really no different than cars, so the trite comments about cell phones keeping better time makes zero sense. Just because you can't relate or appreciate fine mechanical watches doesn't make you right, just different. People concerned about getting from point A to B would obviously suggest an Accord and laugh at the foolishness of paying for a BMW. BMW buyers suffer from the same love of fine engineering as watch nuts do. As I share a love of both passions I think I understand the OP. To answer him, however, is harder. It's a personal thing, like should I pick AW over SSII. I get tired of people asking the masses what they should like. Last edited by BigHat; 05-16-2010 at 12:09 PM.. |

I clicked on the thread thinking you were looking for advice deciding between a Panerai and a Hublot Big Bang King. LOL
I personally would get more long term enjoyment out of the PAM but a PVD finished watch wouldn't be my choice for a long term watch. I like the fact that a standard metal finish can be refinished over the years of use. |

Watches are different than cars. It's more of a luxury item than a car. My "trite" comment about cell phones being more accurate in keeping time? I merely mentioned the simple fact that I own a decent watch, but never wear it. Thus it stops keeping time due to being an automatic watch. "I get tired of people asking the masses what they should like." .. You're too cool..

If you think MOST people in this country don't consider owning a BMW a needless luxury item you're crazy. What attitudes do you expect to find in a BMW site? Talk about drinking our own bathwater. You think people that frequent watch sites consider watches a stupid waste of funds too? People have different likes and hobbies; it's what makes the world go round. Oh, and while you might be able to sell your BMW for 50% of the purchase price after 4 years, most high-end watches retain their value and often appreciate. Of course, not TAGs. This, by the way, is what the watch nuts that don't understand nice cars say about BMW owners. Being irritated at people so insecure about their own decision making ability that they have to post a poll is much different than being "too cool," especially a comparison of a brake kit to a watch. Please. What blinding insights does one expect? Does one tally the votes and then robotically act? Last edited by BigHat; 05-16-2010 at 03:09 PM.. |
